help converting EMX NRPNs to CCs using MidiPipe

Post by enstello »

I'm new here, so hi!

I'm trying to convert NRPN data from EMX drum parameter knobs into CC data that can be mapped in Ableton Live for Impulse, but I'm having trouble.

So far, using MidiPipe, I've only been able to get data from a single knob to convert properly. If I try to add more conversions to my pipe, it only converts the NRPN data from the last knob and all preceding knobs just spit out the original NRPN data.

I've done a ton of reading around online but all the instructions that people give are lacking detail (here's the best one I've found: http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=81308). I feel like there must be some small step or setting that I'm overlooking that will make this work!!!

Can anyone please help me out with this?? Once I figure this out, I'll post detailed start to finish instructions here to help other people out.

I know exactly how you feel. If you have been searching the ableton forums for this you have probably seen my sn a couple of times. I have been off and on working on this for a year or more. I'm lucky and it won't really come into play until I'm show ready with my production stuff, but that's getting closer and I need to get refocused on this and other technical issues.

I have been referenced to DirectEMX and told that one of the recent updates included full MIDI implementation. I am broke so haven't looked into that route yet. I have also looked into Max4Live, which may be my ultimate solution since you can build your own utilities from scratch. But at this point the programming is a little beyond me and I need to invest time in reading up on it and working with the program. For me I want the Part Mutes on the drums to mute the corresponding midi notes in ableton that I use to sequence my EMX. I also want to be able to map parameters to my Akai APCs.

Good luck on this quest. If I motivate myself to work on it a little more I will update you on any progress.

Thanks for the info. I'm currently installing Windows 7 via Parallels, so that I can try to do the NRPN translation with MidiOx. It's a super convoluted way to do this, so I'll definitely check out DirectEMX to see if that's a simpler solution.

Converting NRPN on the ESX

Post by ProfessorNick »

I am pretty close myself. Last night I was able to map all of Drum 1's knobs and buttons to Ableton (as well as Kontakt) using Midipipe. The key is that you set the toggle on for the "set fill byte to" and set it to 127.
Of course make sure you have all the ins and outs routed properly. If I get things together I will soon be posting a template ableton and midipipe file for all.

Good luck.

Nrpn on the Electribe

Post by ProfessorNick »

So the way I was anticipating using the ESX as a controller is that I d select the drum sound to modify first like you normally do with the ESX then twiddle knobs. Problem is when I assign the nrpn to midi CCs, there just aren't enough midi CCs. So I thought hat I could have drum 1 go to midi channel 1 and drum 2 to midi 2 and so on. Problem with that is that all the drums on the ESX transmit on midi channel 10 and I can only get midipipe to translate correctly when I change the midi output channel on the ESX for the drums. No problem per se, but at this point I realize it may be just easier to use the synth part with its predefined midi CCs and just leave the ESX in its Glibal page for midi channel and just select which channel/ drum that I want to alter the tone of. This would bypass midipipe all together and seems kind of like the same thing. Unless there is someone out there who has a working midipipe template, I think this may be the easiest and best way. Now in Ableton I can setup each drum tone to respond to the same midi CC number, but on a different channel of the same midi port. Not seamless, but doable.

I DID IT! Midipipe and the ESX together at last!

Hey, I got it. Just posted about it here, and there is a link to download the Midipipe file.
