I'm Playkeyz, Programmer of 80s PR Soundsets

Post by Mofit »

Hey, all! A kind forum member told me there was a discussion going on here. I'm the guy that programmed the two 80s Pop/Rock Soundsets on the Yamaha Motif/S90s.

I'm utterly ashamed that I have never heard of the Kronos until very recently; nothing against Korg, I just turned my head from music for many months and have not followed new releases.

I would be very, very interested in programming on Korg synths and VSTis. VSTis have been a problem, however, because I don't think it's possible to program a complete 'library' of cover-band sounds without using more than one VSTi.

I will check out the Kronos ASAP, and I would guess with some learning I would have a lot of fun programming it. Hey, my first synth was a Korg Poly 800 (anyone remember the pre-programmed song in that thing) and I would love to see what the Kronos can do!

Nice to meet you all!

EDIT: I'm reading the Kronos webpage, and - wow - this is a monster! I may have to abandon my family in order to spend enough time with this beast.

Very cool!
If you get these completed for the Kronos, I'm definitely a customer!

I was just saying how I find it frustrating that for electric guitar, there are so many options for guitarists to emulate the tone/sounds used in famous songs with effects processors like the Line 6 series. But for synth players, everyone seems content to sell patch libraries that try to emulate the original sound of various other synths or instruments -- not specific sounds used by particular artists, in particular songs.

A lot of us (like myself!) just have music as a hobby, not a profession. I don't have the skill or the free time to sit around trying to clone a particular sound from a song I like. But for a reasonable price, I'd buy a library of such sounds that someone else already put together. It just makes it more fun showing your synth off to your friends, and obviously, is really useful for anyone in a cover band too.

You would be very welcome! Programming the Kronos is big fun, and someone like you would certainly like it!
While some well known signature sounds are in the Kronos presets, there's a lot of that kind still missing, and packages of signature/keyboard hero sounds would certainly find buyers.

80's Sounds on Kronos, How?

Post by ReneKnops »

Hello Sharp,

For a long time I have been searching for 80's sounds for the Kronos and found your post here below. I am a proud owner of a Korg Kronos. Thanks to your excellent video managed to upgraded my Kronos with 120 gb ssd drive.

Can you or someone please help to explain what steps do I need to take to be able to use these great sounds in my Kronos?

For example: Do I need to purchase the OPx or OPX pro in order to get started? Is there a video somewhere that explains how to set everything up?

I look forward hearing back from you.

This forum really rocks!

To put those sounds inside your KRONOS you would need OP-X Pro, plus something like Extreme Sample Converter to convert the VSTi into a SF2.

There's no video that I know of that explains the steps straight through from one end to another, so I'm afraid I can't really help at this moment in time as I've far too much on right now.

Nothing short of me making a video myself would allow me to explain this to anyone.

Sharp.

Re: 80's Sounds on Kronos, How?

Today i recieved the following answer from Sonic Projects , About my question on how to use the soundbank on a midi keyboard (Kronos), maybe this will help other Kronos newbies like me... :

"Regarding Kronos, this workstation of course can be used as MIDI-masterkeyboard to play OP-X PRO-II, but it can't
host/run OP-X PRO-II itself sice this one needs a computer/laptop (the best windows, but there's also a limited
stand-alone version for mac) tu run. If you want to play it over the keyboard of Kronos then your computer/laptop needs
a MIDI-interface so that you can connect Kronos as MIDI-source. If you have no dedicated soundcard/audio-interface then
there are simple usb-midi-interfaces available for this purpose. Also when you have no dedicated soundcard then you need
to download and install (only on windows) the free asio4all der
ivers for real-time playing since normal windows drivers
produce a delay and too much cpu-overhead. The best of course is having a dedicated soundcard/usb audio interface which
in most cases has both MIDI connectivity and audio-converters & drivers.

The best you simply check it all out witzh the free demo version. OP-X PRO-II also needs a vst host to run, but there
are free ones. Check the "VST Host" box on the demo page which describes how to use the free Herman Seib SaviHost and
asio4all drivers to run OP-X PRO-II on a windown pc/laptop. If you are a mac guy then check the VFX Edition sdemo which
is too linked just below the standard demo link (VFX mac demo)."

They mention a midi interface and VST host?
I am not sure what to do, buy don't buy?
still feel a little lost here...

And where and how does extreme sample converter come in?

Thanks

Rene, You do not need a host or a audio midi interface,
You just buy the Vst from Sonic Project then buy Extreme Sample Converter and convert the obx sounds to sf2 format, them load them into kronos. It's not hard and there are many people here who are willing to help you through the process if you get stuck :)
