I just ran across some words of wisdom from the Roland Clan Forums, where a guy named Igglethorpe said:

"Any informed decision is a good decision."

Honestly, that's probably all anyone can say at this point. We all have our opinions, but as long as you've done your homework and are driven to get something because of that, get it. In some cases you'll find a unanimous opinion that a particular synth is terrible or excellent and can then get a better sense of the musical value it adds, beyond comparing its specs.

I think at this point, you have 5 pages of people's opinions, and their opinions are much better than my own, but I would say, do some thinking before you buy. Your decision will be the right one...

...unless you get something other than the Radias.

I hate to give up on people, but at this point I can't believe Morshu doesn't realize he's spouting bullshit. Which means he's deliberately trying to misinform the OP, or trying to get a rise out of the rest of us for seeming to do so. I have to agree with some earlier posters; if any mods are reading this, please seriously consider banning Morshu. At the very least give him a clear warning.

I'm pretty certain he's already been given a warning. On top of that, despite many users suggesting that he should keep all his patch requests and sound help posts in one thread to reduce clutter (one user even went to the lengths of actually creating one for him), he still acts completely oblivious to it.

To the OP. There's a radias as buy it now on eBay for $650. It's an okay deal. You could ask them if they'd be willing to take less. They are averaging $600 on the eBay market. And buy it now is always less of a hassle. I know you wanted a warranty though. Just looking for deals for you, lol!

Thank's Acemonvw for the info. I did check it out, and I'm considering e-bay as an equipment source. I will make a final decision in the not-to-distant future regarding synth equipment. I'm doing my homework. Thank's to all the posters--this is a great forum.

I would also consider checking your local craigslist if it hasn't been mentioned when you find the synth you want. For more popular synths, you might find some in your area (I'm in a large city so I typically can find what I want here). It's not a bad deal since you can typically test it out first and see the quality in person. I would make sure to mess with all the knobs (especially volume) to determine if there's any scratchy sounds from bad connections or dust.

I've purchased many synths on craigslist as well as sold them. You can usually bargain with people and have them sell for at least 15% less than what's going on eBay (considering eBay and paypal take about that much out of the sellers payment). Not a bad way to shop for something.

And while I've never done this and don't really recommend it... Allofcraigslist.com shows you everyone that's selling what you're looking for on craigslist.org, in one place. The reason I've never been sold on this is that someone could sell a piece of crap and there's no buyer's protection like on eBay. Just mentioning it in case you ever want something that you just cannot find anywhere... might be there, and can give you okay prices on things too.

Good luck, let us know what you get!

Hello Everyone,

Just to close-out this thread, I purchased the Akai Miniak synth. The price was right for a beginner, it's a very well-built unit, and it just feels good to play. Yes it has some control limitations, but for my purposes right now, it is fine---and by the way, the sound quality is very good. :)

Again, Thanks for all the comments -- now I have to get back to playing my synth.

Great! Good luck with it.

Now get off forum and find yourself an Akai forum!

akai is horrible you made the wrong choice. You should've gotten the Radias its 9001 times better

I don't think that's true. It's the same thing as the Alesis Micron, both are decent synths. I don't know what the pattern sequencer is like on the Miniak, but I ended up getting the Spectralis because the radias has a very limited sequencer (for making songs at least).

Sure, it doesn't have a ton of voices, but in a DAW you can add as many parts as you like and so you're not terribly hindered. It's compact so it can travel with you.

It's all about preference. Telling someone they made the wrong choice is simply irrelevant. Had he bought it off of craigslist from some guy from another country using Western Union... THAT would be a wrong choice.

To the OP: Enjoy making music, don't let anyone tell you that you made a poor decision. I'm sure Vangelis could do wonders with that synth.

morshu, you've recommended an alesis ion, which has the same engine as the akai synth. If you don't know what you are talking about, just don't talk.
