Efficient Practicing

Post by SlipKnoTCraig133 »

I am currently learning 6:00 by Dream Theater and it's going very slowly. I started 5 hrs ago and am still not up to tempo with the first 20 seconds and forget things/ make mistakes even at half speed. Anyone have any tips on how to learn a new piece (relatively) quickly and efficiently? I feel like it's taking longer than it should

You should start learning very slowly and get everything completely right otherwise you run the risk of making bad habits and cocking it up when you do get up to speed. Learn in sections and look for repetition. Mistakes can take a lot longer to straighten out than learning the song in the first place. As they say, the fastest way to learn is slowly.
