I recently got back into playing after a 25 year break and made the M50 88 my first modern keyboard. TBH, I bought it because of the feel and basic sounds that came with it, only tweaking a few. I had never really been completely satisfied with the majority of the sounds. I've been looking for another keyboard to make up for what I thought was the M50s short commings and purchased a MM6.

The only thing gained with the MM6 was great brass and woodwinds and a little more realestate. I've been able to match most of the MM6 sounds on the M50 after a little work. In fact, the more I tweak the 50 the more I like it and the less play the yamaha gets. Don't sell the M50 short.

If I get a good sax I'll be sure to share it here.
Now, if I could afford a Motif then . . .

Anyone want to buy a used soul?

i own both a motif6 and a M50, and i can say that the PowerGrand sample of the motif beat the pianos of m50.

if the m50 and the flagship m3 has the same engine or the same sound.

then i can say that no korg can beat the piano sound of a motif, considering motif older than the m50.

i only use the M50 outside. but when im practising home i always use the motif

Just thought I'd chime in. I was disappointed with the sounds on the M50 for a while but then I figured out two tweaks:

1) Playing in combi and sequencer modes, I didn't realize that selecting a sound doesn't import all the effects and everything that that sound has in Program mode. Once I started playing through the sounds in Program mode, I was shocked how much better everything sounded. You guys probably already knew this, but I just figured it out!

2) I downloaded the Producer.pcg file for the M3, which has all the preset sounds for the M3, but almost all play on the M50. I found the best piano sound by far is the 4-way piano that is on the M3 but not on the M50. I replaced one of the piano sounds that I didn't really like on the M50 with the 4-way piano, I'd highly recommend it.

drama1 wrote:It's funny because I had my M3 for two years before I finally started using it live. I didn't like the sound either until I started using it on a regular basis. After about a month of gigging with it, figuring out how to change sound without cutoff, I would never go back to my Triton-Pro ever again. I have them side-by-side in my studio, it's your ear that has to get adjusted to the cleaner sound of the M3. Everyone is different, but In my opinion the M3 just completely blows away previous korg product (except Oasys) of course.
I agree with friend drama1.
Most people I have the impression that the old is better. This is because the ear may not be familiar so quickly in a new hearing. The same happens with the music we hear a song for the first time and don't like it. But after some time like it. We will always be one step behind those who make these machines.
Keep your equipment and become familiar after months.

Well I find the M50 organs quite good BUT I still miss a lot of variety and sounds. Haven't used the TR, but I currently own a M50.

The metals are horrible, really. I also own a Yamaha DGX 620 wich is mainly a good piano/harpsichord home keyboard, and it's saxes just overwhelm the m50 ones.

I dont like the M50 pianos, but mainly because Im used to the Yamaha DGX 620 SPECTACULAR piano sound. I think the main reason I dont like the M50 pianos are the keys and not the sound itself. I just can't make it sound like "i feel".

M50 its still a great synth, and I love it.

Leslie effect on a Korg

Post by shydog »

I myself use a Boss RT20 this works well with older Bx3, Triton, etc.. Haven't used it on the M50 yet, as I use it on my Roland Combo or the OB3x depending on what I feel like hauling that day.. The RT will give you distortion, spin up and down plus stop.. It works great.. Give it a try and post your findings..

You can do all of this to your taste with much more flexibility, with a little tweaking, from the effects. The distortion and rotary effect are top-notch.

I think my main concern using the RT20 with the M50 is that the M50 lacks the 'alternate outputs' of other workstations in its class. You'd have to run everything else in mono through it when it is bypassed - e.g. pianos, synth sounds, etc, that you don't want a rotary effect on. The stereo effects in Korg's workstations are fantastic and you'd be missing out...
