SD versions of Electribes- Is a SD card really needed?
Forgive me for not knowing everything Electribe..
Im returning home next week and have the SD version of the MX waiting. I needed a second MX and only had the SD version to choose from.
I am really wondering if someone could help me understand the need for SD sized storage.
Im probally totally wrong on my assumptions.. but Im assuming that there is a naming convention which dictates how many patterns and patches are available on an SD card.... Is this the case?
And same goes for the SX version... Would it be possible to have 32GB of samples to access( I know thats a big number, Im using the size as an example of theoretically how much can be used)
any insight into this would be greatly appreciated

The internal sample memory has not changed, so you can still only load the same total amount of sample time.
I think it is not really an upgrade as much as a cosmetic marketing update - Smart Media is virtually obsolete and SD cards are much easier to get your hands on. I can imagine some people may have thought twice about buying the EMX or ESX because of its age.

makes sense... I understand the limit of what can be loaded to internal... I just am trying to see how/when/why I would use the SD card in terms of needing something over the normal size of the smart media.
Theoretically assuming I had lots of time ... I would like be able to have different complete sets to be able to load into the electribe.
like a mod or something like this..
one example would be all samples being movie sound fx, and another being all vocal samples.
The reason would be to have an electribe being used as a slave and another electribe being the master.. so the regular beats found on one electribe could trigger the other sounds on the other.. but not having standard hits.
More of a huge bowl of soup to chaotically get different results.
imagine 256 different frog sounds or insect sounds.... or god forbid... 256 fart samples or whatever...
So this SD card would have folders with each set... and then I can see where the SD card would just be awesome.. but if you can only have 1 set per card.. then thats another thing all together

IIRC my ESX can only load from the root directory of an SM card, and I would guess the new model is the same, so if you put your data in sub-directories the electribe won't be able to load it.
I suspect you wouldn't need something larger than Smart Media.djfrogstar wrote: I just am trying to see how/when/why I would use the SD card in terms of needing something over the normal size of the smart media

maybe you shouldn't have bought the SD version period, you can still buy "new" older versions for roughly $399 (novamusik.com)
the New SD version retail for $750 (but you can find em at $499)
if you really need a 32gb SD card, those go for another $250
on my EMX, I have a 16mb (read that mb) SM card and I've never filled it up = EVER = why the fark would I need 32 GIGS!!!!!!
geez!
What I want to know is did Korg do ANYTHING to improve the knob jump with the large dial, probably not. We know they didn't update anything, but this is a FIX not an update that is badly needed.
Korg, you're lame, sorry. I'm still in love with you 2003, but ever since, nah really, what's it gonna be 2017 when we find a REAL NEW ELECTRIBE???

yeah I just wanted another EMX, dont really care about the space I guess considering no samples are stored..
I may at some point get a second ESX and then that would mabey have more use on the SD card.. I have piles of SD cards from different retired devices.. so its not really an issue.. I am about to move to australia.. and will wait till im there to get a 4th electribe if .. I even do that.
3 electribes is enough already with how Im using them.. but will wait and see.
thanks for the tip for getting older electribes from novamusic.. will check them

I don't think it has anything to do with size, but that fact that you can't really buy SmartMedia or even read them on newer computers.djfrogstar wrote:if someone could help me understand the need for SD sized storage.
Does it make sense for for Korg to sell a $500 box that has a Smart Media slot that can't even be used? No that makes no sense at all. Hence the move to SD.
The other interesting change in the EMX-SD and ESX-SD is that they are now powered by DC and no longer that weird AC connector thing. I wonder if this changes the sound at all.
Back in my day, we didn't have water. We only had Oxygen and Hydrogen, and we'd have to just shove them together.
