If all the trouble involved, I prefer USB stick with 2 or 2 Gb or even SSD card..

I simply cannot see how it can be done. So much hardware on the board of PA-50 is missing of PA-80..

Better option would be to replace the FDD with SSD reader of some sort.
there have some people to try to replace the floppy drive with a multimedia card reader and it didnt work hehe

FDD replacement

Post by tochinet »

So, until now no solution to replace the FDD ?

I also saw some advertising a few months ago that someone sold the kit for that (without HDD), but I can't find it back.

Did someone open its PA50 ? Could he share photographs ? What are the chips in there, how does the FDD interface look ?

FDD for PA50 has a 34-pin cable attached to PA-50 motherboard. 3.5 inches multicard reader is available, however it doesn't come w/ a 34-pin cable so there's no way to attached it to PA50 motherboard. Multicard reader has a faster read-write speed which will only work via USB interface, not via 34-pin floppy drive cable which has a slower speed.

Flash Drive for all KORG model

Post by sima »

I think there is a good news !!!

While surfing on the subject, I found a link that claims of making a replacement drive for existing floppy drive. So, pl. check here http://www.2av.com.ua/indexe.htm for a possible solution.

(The Bad news is that these are very expensive)

PA50 HDD

Post by werbeeg »

Hi, I'm electronic engineer and I work for werbeeg.com . I've checked all posts on this forum and I think you guys have to many questions and not enough answers.
Replacement of FDD is possible and it works fine but the problem is you must prepare a sd card for this job. I mean you have to make a lot of partitions 1.44MB on a SD card. In each partition you can save 1.44MB of data like on FDD. If you use FDD-SDD replacement you have to switch every virtual disk by a button on your FDD-SDD replacement. Everything is fine if you remember what is on each partition or you have a list. In my opinion it's good solution if you want to rebuild your keyboard in a simple way. But it doesn't give you all features which gives you deep modification. With deep modification you can have a HDD, USB, SDD, sampler, ethernet and some more features which are from models costs 2000 dollars. It's only your choice.

FDD is very slow. When you are playing song from FDD, measure beat doesn't go later and when keyboard is loading , it is stopping. All functions are slow (loading song, DIRECT Style, select) - access time

I just instaled the HDD module in my PA50, bought from werbeeg. com. It works very well. The instalation process is very easy and I had the support of werbeeg's staff.
Now, I am a happy KORG PA50's user :D

Looking at the photo, the EX-500 solid state disk module seems to accept SD flash card. The photo shows a 4GB SD card.
I have a few questions on this:
1) which OS to load into the PA-50 ( PA-80 OS ??? )
2) Will the OS recognize the SD card as a hard drive with its full capacity ?
3) Can I load a style / MIDI file directly from a folder of the SD card ?

For @ktn :

1) You will have to load PA-80 OS into the PA50 ( you can download it from werbeeg web page)
2)The OS will recognize fully the SD without any problems
3) In your SD you can store performances, programs, midi files, recordings also you can load and play a MIDI file directly from SD without any delays.

There is a contact e-mail ( support@werbeeg.com ) where you can write and that guys will responde you immediately to any answer.

ersin,
thanks so much for the answers. So this add on to PA50 is a very worthy update. The floppy is way too limited and slow. 4GB flash drive will be plenty for me.
I also own a Tyros3 but I do like to get my old PA50 upgraded as it is the one I carry out for live performance. The Tyros3 is for my music creation and recording at home only. I rarely brought it out for performance.
