Picked up a MicroKorg XL, some questions.

Post by GiuseppeL »

I have got myself an XL for christmas and thought I would sign up and get myself started with the community.
So here we go, Hi. I am Giuseppe and am a guitarist. I wanted to get into keys and generally learning about sound sculpting- the MKXL seemed a great choice. Yes, I realise the M3 or whatever is much better but I cannot stretch even that little bit further- the XL is already pushing me far enough financially. Anyway, that aside, I have been wondering if there's a database of settings available anywhere to get me going? (although, I do intend on working through the entire manual!)
Thanks,
Giuseppe.

I've only come across one patch collection from another site and it wasn't a very good one.

The best way to go, IMHO, is to take the existing patches and modify them. This is easily done in the software editor - once you understand the basics of synthesis.

Two other things you can do to get sounds you want - 1) get a sound analyzer software and learn how to reverse engineer sounds. It's easier than you think.
2) Get a synth "cookbook" that roughly tells you the settings you need. Since the XL is a two-oscillator synth, it will allow for you to follow most recipes out there. I recommend "Welsh's Synthesizer Cookbook" by Fred Welsh and "Dance Music Manual" by Rick Snoman.
Listen to my tracks on SoundCloud.com and check out my Kaossilator track "The Cobalt Combustion"

No, not for the original Microkorg (I'm not a fan). Love the XL, though!
