What ES-1 MKII swing settings actually do?

Post by trypset »

Electribe ES-1MKII

I'm wanting to make really swung beats, 2stepping, garage stylee.

I read the manual and a swing setting of 50 is strait 16's. It says a setting of 66 provides a shuffled beat.

What does 66 and above actually do to the beats? If I can figure out how the swing is actually affecting the notes it will be easier to place the hits. I can def. just experiment, as I have been, but I'd like to know the workings of the setting. Thanks. TrypseT

I can't remember the exact terminology but it effectively makes the offbeat later (or earlier). so at a value of 0% or 100% (which you can't do on the electribes - but you can on Radias/MicroKorg/etc's arpeggiator) you would get the two steps happening at the same time, either with the offbeat playing at the same time as the previous beat, or playing at the same time as the next beat.

what X-Trade said

the swing value is the position that the offbeat occurs between the previous and next beats

so 50% swing means it's exactly halfway between the previous and next beats - that's basically no swing

66% means it's later, two-thirds of the way to the next beat

75% means it's even later, halfway between where it would be with no swing and the next beat

so at 50% swing all the beats are spaced evenly

Code: Select all

x..x..x..x..
with 66% swing they're later

Code: Select all

x...x.x...x.

In shuffle rhythm, the first note in the pair is exactly twice the duration of the second note.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swung_note

which corresponds to 66%, where the first note takes up two-thirds of the time and the second takes up the remaining one-third
