SMK wrote:Well, I'm already excited over the fact that you can control midi notes with the X/Y pad of the Kaossolator Pro. In fact reading this just came out of left field for me. I was happy with it as it is but wow, a new controller for my synths?!?!

Now the bigger questions:

1. regarding the feature to control external synths via midi note; is that only through external control mode or is this globally as the Kaossilator Pro is in it's normal function or both (switchable)?

2. in midi note mode, what notes are being controlled by the Y axis and what notes are being controlled by the X axis?

3. in midi note mode what octaves or range of notes are being controlled via the X and Y axis?

4. this last question is dependent on how my first question is answered but I'll go for it anyways; is it possible to save different channel, or program paths to each program bank 1-8? For example; program bank 1 is controlling my reactor software while program bank 7 controls the drum beats on an Electribe ESX and program bank 4 is set to a bass sound from the Kaossilator Pro itself.

I don't want anyone to think there has to be any of these complicated features here. To me when one talks about open midi note control over your external synths via X and Y axis, this really opens up a HUGE "can o' worms".

I guess the last question is when does the software and manual become available for download?

Again great job, Korg and thanks to RichF for taking the time to answer our questions. This is awesome.
1. External Control mode is where you'll find the MIDI note messages being transmitted right from the pad. Outside of External Control Mode, the X/Y pad can receive CC messages for note on/off, as well as X/Y position. This is also where you can record/play back using the Gate Arpeggiator.

2. The notes are determined by the KOPro's Key and Scale settings, both of which are determined by the SCALE or KEY buttons on the front panel.

3. You can also switch the octave range from one to six, by holding down the SHIFT button and pressing the SCALE button, then turning the PROGRAM/BPM knob.

4. It sounds to me like that would have to be configured on the receiving end. The KOPro will control whatever device is either "in focus," or following the designated MIDI channel.

5. We'll get them to you ASAP! It's realistic to expect them when the KOPro ships.
Well than thank you Rich for answering our questions...and as you have noticed they are getting a little tougher.

Now going back to what you said about how the settings for midi notes scale and octave settings are set up through the KOPro normal operation of those features (scale or key buttons):

1. If one goes through EXT control mode, to use midi notes on X and Y pad, then wouldn't those button features be off making it impossible to set the scale and key for midi notes?

On KP3, the EXT mode made all of the feature buttons be control for midi note or CC. So I expect that the same goes for KOPro.

This is very critical in regards to controlling other synths via X and Y pad however this problem can be solved even before shipment of the KOPro, or at least before the software is available.

2. Can you get a hold of who ever is making the software for the KOPro and tell them that since the fans here want to have midi note control on the X and Y pad while the KOPro is not in EXT mode to make that a switchable feature in the software? Basically we all know that in standard mode the X and Y can control anything via CC in standard mode but can we have the feature to switch from CC to midi note control for the X and Y pad..

It's good that we are discussing this now so your team at Korg can do the last finishing touches on your product before release.

1. No, the Scale and Key buttons are not MIDI assignable, so those functions are still available in External Control mode.

2. Feature request noted... We definitely see all the desire for this functionality.

We're well beyond the design stages at this point, so we're not here looking for "finishing touches" for the KOPro. We still want to hear feature requests, but let's not treat this thread as a last-minute opportunity for product changes. I'm simply providing as much advance info as I can for you before the KOPro hits the shelves.

I hope this "sneak peek" info I'm providing is useful, but let's remember that we'll be in a better position to gather reactions and opinions once you physically get your hands on the KOPro and see how it will fit in your setup.

Also, just as a general rule, it's never as easy as it sounds to make software changes... Just because on the surface, it seems as though a function should be easy to implement, doesn't mean that it is. In fact, it's often costlier to modify software than hardware. It's almost never a question of just flipping a switch, or modifying a few lines of code. :)

No advanced sampling functions, nor resampling, no possibility to use its own sounds and treat it like all the rest. And resampling boosts creativity.
You want a system update, you've got a new machine.
It lacks sampling and enveloppe detection.
What can be expected from the dinausoresque MIDI technology, except a value bewteen 0 and 127 ? I wonder.

What are people planning to use this device for?

My main reasons for buying the KOPro will be jamming and working on songs away from the computer using it and my piano/synth. I will also probably use it for some synth solo noise/pads live (while playing mainly guitar...).

. great the kaossilator pro... but it might be super to offer the kp3 owners at least a os upgrade to have the capability to do overdubs on the 4 loops that the kp3 offers... lets say for a 60 euro or 75.. i would love to pay this amount of money..

this was brought up earlier in the thread, but i didn't see a response, so I'll ask:

From a hardware perspective, is there any difference between the KP3 and KOPro? If so, and the real difference is in the software, would korg release a firmware upgrade or a patch or something to allow the KP3 to be used as a KOPro? Times are tough economically, so dropping $400 for a new unit is a bit out of range, but I'd be willing to pay for an update that would allow me to use my existing hardware in new ways. Just a thought.

Even if that was possible which I highly doubt, it wouldn't happen in a million years. These products are not life necessities, they're entertainment devices. If times are tough, don't buy one. You'll survive. Trust me.

wow, way to be an asshole. I wasn't the only one in this thread who was curious about such possibilities. Frankly, I have more than enough gear to keep me busy as it is. The build looks pretty much identical, and I'm sure someone will tear one open before long and we'll find out anyhow.

Given the state of the economy, it would seem like a smart move on Korg's part to provide such an upgrade for a fee, if it is indeed possible. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate such an option.

Anyhow, I'll be curious to see if there's an answer. If you don't care....just scroll on down. ;)

well it is not more than 10 years ago.. that companies did regularly offer an upgrade platform for leftout early adaptors of their products.. even companies like tc eletronics and line 6 have recently offered this to their customers.. also i really do not understand why all these comanies with longstanding reputations an existence.. choose their shareholders quick ix approach.. developing a product and enhancing it is a strategy which will gain more on the long erm.. esp. in times of crisis..

someting a lot of small companies do...

this isn't an upgrade of the KP3 though, but rather a whole new product altogether. I know it looks the same, but still

They went and changed the leds which are probably on the pcb, so there's no reason that they wouldn't have changed something else too. I don't think that the KP3 and KOPro firmwares can be swapped, mainly because they said they have doubled the size of the drum rom from the original kaossilator and it is possible that KP3 doesn't have sufficient memory to hold the samples in.

I might be wrong though, this won't be certain until someone cracks both units open and takes a look what's inside :D

I'm pretty sure this will never happen.
Also; if it indeed is the case that external synths can't be played & sampled at the same time (unless I totally misunderstood the debate), this will neither be implemented. The reason is Korg want to leave out some functionality that will be implemented in later generations. This is typical corporate thinking, like it or not.
