Bought it brand new in 1994. Worked perfectly until 2007! I still love it, and am hoping to bring it back to life!

Definitely a service engineer job!!! That battery change sounds a bit suspect to me - the i3 should not have changed its boot up time at all.
Just as a polite footnote, please place keyboard questions in the appropriate forum section - it is not likely that you will get help in this "New Member" section which is designed for introducing yourself.
Let us know how you go (in the i-series section)
