Oly,
Can you provide an mp3 of the sound you're after - it's impossible to know what you are after without owning a Motif or hearing the sound.
That aside, there are huge piano options available on OASYS and I'd be very surprised if you could not recreate the sound you're after. As I posted recently on another post, here are the in-built piano options within a standard OASYS:
EXs2:
- Steinway Piano (500MB)
HD1:
- Acoustic Pianos (including Bosendorfer)
- Fender Rhodes
- Wurlitzer
- CP80
- D6
all of which are excellent (and actually superior to the Nord Stage and Elecrto) - especially when including the programs contained in the quite recently released free sound sets HD-1_XP by Korg (downloadable from www.korguser.net)
MOD-7:
- Access to Yamaha DX/FM sound libraries (I provide 200,000 sounds on http://www.knect.ie/OASYS.html) - including every 80's FM Piano sound ever created. You'll also find a small program bank of CP80 sounds I've programmed for the OASYS there.
Other excellent "keyboardist" options on the OASYS include:
- CX3 Virtual Organ
- STR-1 Electric pianos, Clavs and Harpsichords
And you can purchase separately:
- Karo Libraries of acoustic and electric pianos with stunning sample quality (although admittedly there are still velocity switching problems in their Fender Rhodes electric pianos and one or two other pianos that need sorting out and deter them from being usable)
All of these can be treated by the OASYS's extensive effects system - Amp modelling, phaser, tremelo, overdrive, chorus, delay, reverbs... all now fuelled by Korg's 700+ effects presets library they released some months ago for free (also available on www.korguser.net).
OASYS may be discontinuted, but it continues to be the benchmark - don't underestimate its scope and depth of acoustic and vintage piano and keyboard sounds. What you're after is in there!!
Kevin
PS: As a late thought and rereadof your post - I wonder if you're after the CP80 (and don't know it?). If so the options here are:
- Check out the 'Electric Piano' inthe GM Bank -its a CP80
- Use my CP80 programs
- Use the HD-1_XP CP80s (absolutely fantastic programs)
- Buy KARO's CP80 - absolutely magnificent sampled CP80 (70?)

The Pitch Stretch parameter can be helpful in getting this kind of sound from a grand piano program. Use it to make the tone brighter and a little artificial. Then layer the piano with an FM electric piano or Rhodes sound, and perhaps a pad.
As Kevin mentioned, an alternative to a grand piano sound would be the CP-80. Layer it as mentioned above.
Maybe add "too much" reverb in 80's fashion.

Actually - that parameter is very interesting - do you know more about it - I wonder what it actually does to samples. It really affects the sound in a quite natural way. Very interesting.ksounds wrote:The Pitch Stretch parameter can be helpful in getting this kind of sound from a grand piano program.
PS - ksounds - I've only now made the connection that you are 'ksounds' who developed the sample pianos and B3 programs for the Kurzweil (and Motif and Triton) which I purchased from you some time back. Your works is impeccable and has hugely enhanced the K2500. Coupled to the very good K2500 keyboard action, your Steinway programs are fabulous - really excellent to play - cheers!
One other thought for the original question: The M1 piano is great to layer with electric piano and/or pad. The M1 was released in the late 80's, so it certainly sounds like that era. Pretty sure the OASYS has that sample...
Kevin,
Thanks so much for your kind words about my piano and B3 sounds! I'm glad you enjoy playing them! Very encouraging to hear.
The Pitch Stretch parameter changes the formant characteristics by raising or lowering the pitch of every sample, then transposing the keymap so that the correct pitches are still heard. If you use this parameter to make the sound brighter, for example, the individual samples you hear were originally assigned to a lower notes on the keyboard. Since they are transposed upward, they sound brighter (think "chipmunk effect" on vocals).
peeradonn,
Thanks for your positive comments about the pianos! K-Sounds' Triton format sample data is loadable on the OASYS, but not the programs and combinations. I doubt I will create an OASYS version of these sounds. Perhaps Signature Piano might make it to OASYS format in the distant future, but I do not have access to that keyboard at this time, and there are several other projects that are on my list.
