Creating Synth Sounds

Post by blakrain »

I just bought the EMX a few days ago. I had a chance t hear the demo tracks and was hooked. While I have never owned anything with tone or wave generation, I have owned a drum machine (albeit a very old one a Yamaha RX8). I have a good ear for sounds and once I know where to start I can run with it. My question is while the demos show the amazing sounds one can get out of it, It doesn't show the settings used to get those sounds. I found "Acid type" sounds more or les by trial and error. How do I find the settings used to creat some of the bass or piano-like souds? I know of tones and waves but I don't have training on how to apply them to create the sounds in the machine (i'e' creating a scratch sample or a guitar bass sound) Does anyone have any suggestions on a starting point to learn how to use the synth to its fullest?

Here's a great resource I've referenced other people to several times here:

There are also books, like welsh's synthesizer cookbook, and similar things.

I thought you could analyze a demo sound by selecting it, and then checking the "original value" settings, to see how it was made...? I just got my EMX recently, so I have not had the chance to get into this yet. Some of the Demos on this box are pretty cool, IMHO...

I found teh other sounds for pianos and guitars today! it ws completely by chance. I am more than a little disappointed in the instruction manual since nowhere does it mention how to find those sounds.

Choose a synth part, then spin your synth oscillator knob to either the PCM + comb or the PCM + WS setting. Then hit part edit. You'll be in the sample list.
