I play out with my Triton Pro and M50-73. First off, 3 keys makes a HUGE difference (and I'm still adjusting)! Secondly, I originally bought my M3-73 to replace my Triton Pro in my live rig (up until getting the M50 I only gigged one synth with no backup). After getting most of my patches programmed on the M3 I started to realize how much better the M3 was over the entire Triton line. Then at SOME point I got the thought in my head, "Man it'd be great if they made a synth that was lighter with just the sounds, no sampler... oh yah, the M50!"
My M3 never leaves the studio. It's not because of the weight or I think it's fragile, but because I sometimes do back to back to back nights of gigging and I am too lazy to unpack my gear and repack it. If I need to practice or work something out, I'd have to unpack my gear if I didn't have a good spare already set up. Also, the M3 is really a production workstation which I don't need on the road. But there are times I debate dropping the M50 and going with the M3 (mainly for the XY touchscreen).
If I only could own one synth though, it'd be the M3-73 all decked out, no question. But I love my M50-73 and when I just want to noodle around, I usually go to it instead of the M3... and I don't know why.

Current Korg Gear: KRONOS 88 (4GB), M50-73 (PS mod), RADIAS-73, Electribe MX, Triton Pro (MOSS, SCSI, CF, 64MB RAM), SQ-64, DVP-1, MEX-8000, MR-1, KAOSSilator, nanoKey, nanoKontrol, 3x nanoPad 2, 3x DS1H, 7x PS1, FC7 (yes Korg, NOT Yamaha).
Since I don't own or ever even played an M50, if it's anything like the M3 as far as program or combi changing, it is far to slow for live performance just hitting the program/combi buttons, in my humble opinion. That's why the Karma is sooo important to live performance. Being able to change sounds w/o the cutoff and doing it lightning fast is crucial, especially when gigging with only one board. I actually have some combi's with four programs on scene one, two programs on scene two, a split on scene three and so on. I hit one button, hold down the sus pedal, no cutoff of sound. Heaven. I'm even comtemplating using a foot switch to change scenes, that way I don't even have to take my left hand off the keyboard to changes sounds. In one song I use the touchscreen extensively for going between a baroque type string to a fat analog type string. Again, no cutoff of sound, just a smooth transition of sounds. And while I'm not into techno, hip-hop or anything even remotely resembling that genre of music, I have to say the Radias exp is more than capable to produce some fat analog sounds from the old days in addition to the techno, hip-hop stuff.

Re: Korg M50 61 keys
I appreciate that, I was thinking mainly about the sound quality.kimu wrote:it would be more fair to compare M3 and Motif, M50 is not in the same category as Motif, rather M50 could be compared with Mo.Kevan Barrett wrote:Hi
It will be interesting to see how the M50 compares with my MOTIF ES6.

Thanks for that. I hope to start exploring this the M50 very soon.jerryv wrote:For what it's worth, the m50 does support a 'favorites' section .. it just doesn't call it that. They refer to it as 'categories', and you could create a 'favorites' category and then load it up with your favorite sounds to make it quicker to select from them .. Look up 'categories' in the index of the m50 owner's manual ..
Re: Korg M50 61 keys
consider that D/A mounted in M50 seems to be not the same of D/A mounted in M3 (so even if you have same ROM, same program/Combi, same PA system you could ear difference in how M3 and M50 sounds. i guess the D/A in Motif are in the same class of D/A used in M3 (while M50 probably use "cheaper" D/A)Kevan Barrett wrote:I appreciate that, I was thinking mainly about the sound quality.kimu wrote:it would be more fair to compare M3 and Motif, M50 is not in the same category as Motif, rather M50 could be compared with Mo.Kevan Barrett wrote:Hi

The D/A in the M3 and M50 are identical. CONFIRMED.
And the sound quality is identical to the M3. I own both and play both daily.
The M50 sounds awesome...

Glad to hear that. I always thought the whole different D/A in the M3 and M50 was an internet myth. And for what it's worth, Stephen Kay -- who ought to know! -- has written on the Karma Lab site that he cannot hear any difference between his M3 and M50.McHale wrote:The D/A in the M3 and M50 are identical.
