the plugin won't create any sound. that is why you need to create the audio track. the plugin is basically a midi portal that will take the note data you send to it and send it over USB to the M50.

If I create an Audio track (Real Instrument) on Garageband, I can hear whatever patch I'm using on the M50 (via headphones on the Mac) but I can't open the M50 Plug In Editor from there (on the same -audio-track, is not available)

no, you have to use two tracks.

understand that there are two different things going on:

you're sending MIDI data to the M50. MIDI being data that tells it what notes to play and when... (so you can edit events and that)

Audio then comes out of your M50 and you need it to be combined with your other tracks in order to hear it.. so you need an audio track on monitor to take the input back. The plugin doesn't generate any sound and it doesn't pick up any sound from the inputs.

Eventually - when you are happy with that track, you can then record it as audio and move on to working on the next one.

its not quite ideal because Garrageband won't let you send multiple tracks to the same plugin, but it works...

I understand that MIDI is just events, not Audio.

If I send MIDI data to the "Software Track" on Garageband (playing on the M50 keys), I'm able to record and I'm able to see that MIDI events were recorded, but can't hear what I'm playing and have no playback on what has been recorded.

I've created an AUDIO or "Real Instrument" track on Garageband but have no idea how to relate/combine with the MIDI track as you said.

Sorry for so many questions and thank you again.

you don't need to do anything, they are completely separate.
one is your output to the M50 (the plugin instrument track)
the second is your audio input track (the 'real instrument' track)

set the audio track to input monitoring on.
then just start your sequence, or start entering your notes, etc...

Thats it, I haven't tried it, but at least thats how it should work in theory.

That's what I'm doing, but what's being recorded is AUDIO and not Midi.

If I set (play on) the Audio "Real Instrument" track, that's the one I'm getting Audio from; there's nothing (MIDI events) showing up on the MIDI "Software Instrument" track you are referring to.

What am I doing wrong?

make sure you have the MIDI track selected, not the audio track.

I don't have an M50 so can't go through all the steps, but if this doesn't work then it may just be that it can't be done and its a limitation of garrageband (it is very limited, because really they want you to buy logic!)

edit:
or, at least make sure that the MIDI track is armed for recording. notice how there is a record arm button (first button) for each track. if it is red then that track will be recorded on. if it is greyed out, then it is not armed for recording.

Ok my friend,

I armed both tracks, and Audio and Midi is being recorded.
When I create a second "software track" and choose Midi Plug In Editor as sound generator, I'm getting the error messages showing in the links below.

Thanks again!!

The Plug-in editor is designed to be used in a plugin rack like the VST device rack in cubase, and then MIDI channels just routed to it, then run in sequencer or combi mode as a multitimbral device. so only one instance can be run at a time.

what you will have to do is remove the plugin, or possibly easier (if it works) is to freeze the MIDI tracks that you are not editing. I think in garrageband this is called locking.

a necessary workaround because garrageband doesn't have the kind of plugin and MIDI infrastructure to do it properly.
