have you seen the new Star Trek?

As the title suggests, anything goes in this section.

No doubt, it is a jarring departure and many will feel the same. But, the movies were taking in less and less box office. Changing back to the original characters wasn't enough; something radical had to happen. If that means keeping the franchise alive, I'm behind it. It worked! STAR TREK is the first movie to break 200 million (U.S. domestic), this year.

Though I pointed out my views between Original and Next series, this is really about "boring" versus "exciting" STAR TREK. As far as I'm concerned, that started with the first movie, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE. Great Klingon battle and Jerry Goldsmith score, but the rest of the movie was a really dragged out version of "The Changeling" episode, substituting Nomad with V'GER . As much as I like bald women with tan legs, I haven't been motivated to watch the movie, since I first saw it in a theater, over 30 years ago. Been meaning to, though.

I remember Roddenberry being mad that STAR WARS had long lines, while STAR TREK lost money. It wasn't rocket science, as one was new and exciting. It's funny how creators of certain series have a really great concept, but are sometimes best to let others handle it. This is true not just of Roddenberry, but of the X-FILES' Chris Carter, who dropped the ball on the latest X-FILES movie. He was often upstaged by partners Kim Manners and Rob Bowman.

Anyway, I really liked THE WRATH OF KHAN, as well as parts 3 and 4. UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY was good, as was FIRST CONTACT. I can actually enjoy all of them, but half of them are not that exciting for most people.

By the way, anyone liking this new film should view WRATH OF KHAN, as that movie starts out with the Kobayashi Maru exercise and later reveals that Kirk cheated on it, which is brilliantly shown in the new movie. Desptie the "techno" pace of the newest flick, I was having far too much fun with the pace, character homages and TREK references to dwell on its faults.

This is a banner year for sci-fi and there is a lot of disagreement over TERMINATOR: SALVATION and OUTLANDER or even the Raimi horror flick, DRAG ME TO HELL. I expected the worse from McG (CHARLIE'S ANGELS), so I enjoyed SALVATION. OUTLANDER seems slow for some, but I thought it was well done and had a touching end.

As a no budget filmmaker, I've made a few indie sci-fi's, so I tend to be a forgiving fan. :)

Looking forward to:

SURROGATES
DISTRICT 9
PANDORUM and
AVATAR.

Off topic but I thought this new Terminator was excellent. I never thought any of the sequels could be as good or better than the original(I didn't care much for any that came after the original) and again I've been proven wrong.

Mike, you excited about Transformers? I know I am! 22 more days!

I also hope I'm not the only Korg member who is getting excited about the GIJoe flick coming out.

Back on topic...

We.. allow me to rephrase... "I" needed a Star Trek that appealed to the myself and the masses and make a TON of $$ while doing so and I think everyone can agree that the past films did not achieve that. They nailed this one and everyone I know has gone to see it atleast twice, impressive.

I understand Trekkies and other fans were already content with the fan base but this new movie has opened peoples eyes that in the past might have scoffed @ the words Star and Trek.
Life is short, play a KORG!

I agree, whatever it takes to keep the franchise ablaze. Strek is one of the better sci-fi series, tv and not, and I want to see more. Now give us a new tv series and some great sequels and I'm good.

Oops, you're right - I forgot to put TRANSFORMERS 2 on that list. It looks like a lot of fun. I was not expecting to like the first one, but I had a great time.

They are all available, but I don't want to alienate you. Watch EXILE, first, then I'll give you the links. It will be out, in a couple of weeks. I'll post about it. Like I said,....very low budget. Hard to compare to 100 -200 million dollar flicks, but it has a cool story. Some scenes are on my YOUTUBE PAGE

Well, I watched Exile crash. I thought it was cool. I was expecting a version of plan 9 from outer space and this is way beyond that one. Nice job. You gotta start somewhere and this is fun to watch.

sewa wrote:If not then don't bother. I have just came back from the cinema and I can easily say that it has been by far the worst Star Trek I have ever seen; and I've seen all the episodes of "the Next Generation" (which I love) and most of "Voyager" ( which I also like even if it wasn't as good "the next gen"). Then there was the great "first contact" and quite good "Nemesis".

this, on the other hand, is below any standards. Idiotic plot (a star fleet cadet becoming a captain within five minutes after an alien attack), stupid dialogs and completely none of that ambiance that I love the Trek series for.. Just pure action and even that on pretty miserable level.

so if you're planning to go out to the cinema, make sure to pick up something else.

cheers

I couldn't agree more. For a REAL trekky, is just a lame show. I enjoy William Shatner's humor so much, is a delight to see an old Star Trek movie. But this circus, is just sad.

I think I have almost ALL movies on DvD, maybe a couple I haven't been able to find.

My favorite: Generations, then First Contact.

Sorry for the off topic ...

I gotta say Urban's performance was the highlight of the film for me. The way he kept shooting up Kirk, great stuff. And the alternate timeline leaves a lot of room..........

It's finished, now. I don't want to derail this thread. EXILE is being discussed in THIS THREAD, in the OASYS forum, since it was scored with an OASYS and Virus TI.

Back on topic, INSURRECTION was on the other night and I have to admit that I enjoyed it more the second time around. Sure, I like some STAR TREK better than others, but I have to admit that I can enjoy watching them all.

Seen as this has already turned into a general discussion on sci-fi this year, I urge anyone who hasn't already seen it who likes 'traditional' or 'classical' sci-fi like 2001, Solaris, etc, to go and see 'Moon'. I saw it last week and I though it was fantastic, produced on a budget but you would never guess, and despite what would appear to be a very limiting setting and story-line, it explores a lot of concepts and emotions.

They even used real models, which I always feel looks more real currently than most computer generated stuff, which always seems to be done over the top and unrealistic. e.g. star wars 1, 2 & 3 versus 4, 5 & 6.

as for the star-trek film, I thought it was okay, but really didn't understand their thinking in the sets. its like the BBC had made it or something - concrete and that in the engineering section? its just like they ran out of money and borrowed a warehouse for filming! although I like the divergent storyline which gives them the opportunity for more experimentation without ruining the continuity of the series.

edit: for those of you who don't know of it at all, I found the trailer here:
