M50 as a Controller

Post by Guesss »

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting the m50-88. The one question I have is when the m50 acts as a midi controller for say...cubase/reason or whatever, do we have to map the keys of the keybaord to the program? Or are there some sort of templates we can get? How would the setup compare to say...a dedicated controller such as the novation SL?

Finally, can we use VST plug-ins and all that fun stuff? I would like to use the EastWest Quantum Leap Symphonic orchestra library.

The reason I'm getting the m50 instead of a dedicated midi controller is because I would like to option to play without the computer sometimes. But I would like it to do double duty.

THanks

You might be able to map some of the other buttons and knobs to your sequencer or a VST, but there's no need to map the keys. Any modern sequencer will know how to communicate with a MIDI device that follows the MIDI standard, as the M50 does. Doing stuff like this is a reason there *is* a MIDI standard.

Why couldn't you use a VST? Your VST would just be driven by MIDI data from your sequencer, so as long as the M50 can get MIDI data into the sequencer (it can) and the sequencer can route that to a VST (it can), you're fine.

Thanks for the clarification.

When I was researching for just a midi controller such as the Novation SL/Axioms..etc, the ads usually have something about the ease of mapping the buttons or how automap works...etc. So I was just abit concerned.

The M50 was designed to act as a keyboard controller. And it's phenomical as one.

Watch this, don't listen to mis-information:
