For many years I was a dedicated follower of Yamaha keyboards.
For many reasons I have decided to sell all my Yamaha keyboards and module.
If everything goes well I will become a Korg keyboard player hopefully this week.
Last week I ordered a PA-588.

It feels like being home already.

I do not have my PA-588 yet but first questions are comin' up.

I have read the Korg has a twin built-in sequencer. ( 2 x 16 tracks ).
Am I right to say both sequencers can record 16 tracks each ?
I would prefer to use 32 tracks for recording/playing my songs but I guess that is wishful thinking, correct ? It would be great though !

How is the PA-version working wth Sonar ?
Are there many Sonar users ?

The PA has indeed 2 16 tracks sequencers, but they are separated sequencers = you can load 2 songs in it and then with the balance slider fade from one song in another.

But you can't use them as one 32 track sequencer

Hi Jeff, and hello from me as well,

In Song Play (Playback) mode both Player 1 and Player 2 can each play back either a MIDI file or an MP3 file. They are two independent players. You can start them both at the same time if you wish and by having the fader set to center position you will hear an equal volume from both together.

In Sequencer (Record) mode, player 1 can record, edit and audition MIDI multi-track arrangements of up to 16 tracks. Player 2 is disabled. You can not load an MP3 file in Sequencer mode, which is just for creating MIDI files. There is a playback mode which just works with the MIDI file currently loaded in Player 1.

In MP3 Recording mode (SHIFT+ENTER), everything you hear from Left and Right outputs is recorded as MP3 audio. Two MIDI files played by the two Players can be recorded. But you cannot enter MP3 Record mode if an MP3 file is already loaded into either or both of Player 1 and Player 2. Also, you cannot enter MP3 Record mode while in Sequencer mode.

I am confused. I was talking about midi recording, sorry.

I forgot MP3's can be recorded too. Yamaha keyboards cannot
record any MP3's. It seems the new S910 will be able to play MP3's only.

Hi Jeff,

So, for MIDI recording you enter Sequencer Mode, press RECORD, and select which recording method you want to use. You can record 16 tracks on Player 1, Player 2 is disabled while doing MIDI recording.

I normally start with Backing Sequence (Quick Record) mode, because that allows me to quickly flesh out a song using style-based accompaniments that are captured into the multi-track recording. I choose styles that have good variety in the percussion tracks, and I make liberal use of variations and fills to make the percussion track as good as possible. I never change the percussion track after I captured it.

Then I audition and Edit mixer and FX settings for each track paying special attention to pan settings so I get a good stereo placement of the instruments. Then I delete some of the auto-accompaniment tracks and I play a manual accompaniment version instead while using Multitrack Sequencer recording mode.

Neither does my PA800 ( except as optional extra)

Actually I'm going to download a manual when I get a chance , mainly to work out if there are any style differences.

You PA2X guys are just plain spoilt with your inbuilt extra's. Haa Haa

Sorry for rambling about MP3 in my earlier post, the MP3 haardware is on the Pa2x as standard and the Pa800 as an option. You can not add it to the Pa588.

However the Pa588 does have the same dual player as the Pa2x and Pa800 (except you can play only MIDI files), and my more recent post about MIDI recording in Sequencer mode is relevant to the Pa588.
