distored/corrupt "ROM" sounds help!

Post by OmarNoori »

hi i turned my keyboad on today and all the rom(factory sounds) were awfully corrupt, distorted and scratchy.

what I did:

formated keyboard
reinstall 2.01
installed 2.01 sounds

and it still sounds the same.

does this mean i have to ship it in? =(

Must be something in the air with system resets today. :!:
Go to www.korgpa.com and download the two system reset files from the Utilites page and run those through your keyboard exactly as the instructions say.

Regards.

OK... so a fresh OS installed, resources loaded, and a full system reset with OS resources loaded and you still have problems. :?

At this point I'd start looking for a hardware fault. Does the Pa800 sound distorted through the headphone socket ?.

 Ram sounds work ?.

Are you 100% sure the format and system reset went as expected ?.
If your sounds are corrupt on the SSD this should have restored them.

I really can't think of anything else mate. Sorry.

OmarNoori,

From the above threads I think that the ROM containing the factory samples is faulty. This can happen with ROM devices, though it is very rare. Unfortunately you will have to take it to a Korg repair center to get the factory ROM replaced. It has to be de-soldered to replace it.

Best regards,
Rob

It's simple. My Pa2x is outside of it's 1-year warranty period. If it develops any fault in future then I will have to pay for the repair. My M3 is still within its 1-year warranty period and if it develops a fault before the warranty runs out then Korg will pay for the repair.

Hi Rob.
I'm not as well up to speed on the internal hardware as you, so I was wondering you mention that the sounds are on ROM, then what's on the SSD ? I always thought that contained all the PCM data and pretty much everything else.

Hi Sharp,

On the Pa series keyboards the factory samples are in a mask programmed ROM, installed at manufacture time. The samples can never be changed. Of course you can load user samples into user RAM and remap the Sounds to use user samples, but that is all. I do have a service manual for the Pa2x on non disclosure basis, Korg Italy said that I can use the service manual information to help people on the forum, but I can never post it or send it to anyone else.

On the M3 it is different. The factory samples are on SSD and are copied at boot time into an internal RAM. The M3 factory samples are upgradeable as we saw recently with M3 XPanded v2.00 etc. I don't have a service manual for the M3 yet, but I am hoping one day Jerry Kovarsky will trust me with one :-)

Best regards,
Rob

This sounds exactly like the problem I had..
It was diagnosed as a mask ROM problem.
(In the end it was something different) but Korg at Milton Keynes (for UK owners) were absolutely spot-on, and kept me posted all throught he repair.
edit: my problem was with pa1x-pro, but exactly the same symptoms.

Hi Tommy,

Thanks for the info. May I ask what was the eventual diagnosis, what had to be replaced and how much were you charged?

Many thanks,
Rob

Thanks Rob.

I guess what threw me was that the system reset file is well over 100MB and I assumed that contained all the PCM data in compressed format for the SSD.
Any idea why the file is so big ?. It's hardly the size of the OS ?.

Regards.
