How many drum sounds on a drum part?

Post by davidmx »

Hey everyone,

I want to know if I can record more than 7 drum sounds when I'm creating a drum part.
And if I can, how do I go about it?

Thank you

this is all pretty vague. what model of Electribe are you working with? are you asking if you can apply more sounds to a pattern than there are available parts? if so, the answer is no. for example, on the EMX, there are nine available drum parts. let's pretend you have a synth sound on Synth Parts 1-5. you can occupy 9 individual Drum Parts (1-5, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b), and play any combination of them simultaneously. you cannot switch out a Part's sound partway thru a pattern, nor can you "nest" more than one sound within each part.

Thank you getting back to me and sorry for being so vague.

I have a EMX-1 and I want to be able to add more drum sounds than just
1-5, 6A, 6B, 7A, 7B while creating a drum pattern.

On my old DR 202 drum machine I can add up to 13 different drum sounds while making a drum pattern.

So, I'm just stuck with the 9 drum sounds then?

Thanks again

sort of. if you specifically want to use the inbuilt drum sounds, you'll be capped at the aforementioned 9. but -- don't forget that you can use the 5 Synth Parts to create more drum sounds from scratch. using the basic waveforms (saw/squ/sin/tri and noise), you can pretty much create any electronic drum sound you need. of course, this will eat into the available synth parts so this might not work for you.

i must say, your patterns must be pretty crowded to require more than 9 drum sounds per each. are you sure you're making the most use of your EMX? try using 9 sounds on one pattern, then starting a new pattern when you want to introduce different drums, while dropping out some of the previous ones.

if none of the above suggestions work, get another Electribe!
(actually, do this anyway!)

I agree, I've owned an EMX for over 2 years and I dont' think I've ever used all 9 parts. Part of what I don't like is how the 6-A is cancelled out by 6-B (or the the other way around I never remember) I understand its application; I just have little use for it and when I need that 6-A or 6-B part and it gets cancelled it bums me out cuz I don't get all 9 parts. But there's work arounds; just gotta move the sounds around to other parts.

I'm digressing, anyway, you should need more than 9 parts are mentioned, plus isn't there a preset on the EMX that allows you to recreate ER-1 sounds?

also note that in the PCM (for the synth parts) sounds there is few settings with drum samples mapped across the keyboard. In theory you could have a dif drum sound on every step. Also, for fun try setting a synth part to Dr-perc (76) and messing with the arp.

I've always viewed the ESX and EMX as having only 7 parts, but as an added bonus you have the "B" parts for related sounds (like open hihat on 6A and closed on 6B is obvious), but also for snares with different release lengths etc. I view the two B-parts as a bonus :)

Ahhh....
what a fresh positive spin on the matter, you just opened up a new approach for me. I'm now more "glass is half full instead of half empty"
Good thought

thanks
