I don't know about the price of the Neko, but I highly doubt it's 8K or even close to that.panzernik wrote:In Europe the neko xxl costs almost 8000 euros , and i think thats a lot of money for basically a pc running win xp, also the price will rise if you want to install third party vst .The MUSE RECEPTOR seems like a for more logical but if someone wants to go with soft - synths
As for the Receptor, well..... check out the V-Rack. ....Costs only $1200.
here are the prices in france, the neko XXL is 7800 €

Insane, 6,899 USD = 5,231 Euro.
Seems the same Neko is 800 euro cheaper in Germany than France.

Making music is a passion, not a choice of lifestyle
Yep, tell me about it. I am going to order a 1GB RAM for my Fantom G to get max. sampling time and long story short, normally you could just buy one who meets the correct/precise spes. and that's it, but it turns out that only certain RAM memories actually works correctly with the Fantom G. Mutec in Germany offers a 1GB RAM that has been officially tested/approved by Roland and it costs 118 Euro + 30 Euro for shipping = 148. Now, if I order something abroad that costs more than 112 Euro = 1.000 NOK (Norwegian kroner) then I have to pay another 25 % (VAT) on top of that to the state. So here is the figures for what that "simple" 1GB RAM actually costs in the end:spalding12 wrote:you gotta love the SENSE OF HUMOR in the politicians in european countries
VAT... yeah...
great idea, huh?
148 Euro = 1.317,54 (NOK) + 25 % VAT = Total cost: 1.646,94 (NOK) or Euro = 185 or in USD 243,72 with todays currency.
And then I should even be very "grateful" because the limit used to be 200 NOK but is now "generously" increased to 1.000 NOK before 25 % VAT applies

Off-Topic (sorry)
Yes, definitley good this "Riff" thing - thanks sharp:), Why do the Neko's (it seems) have "severel "hosts' in though? (Ableton, Karsys, Riff? etc). Would like to see if there are any Manual PDF downloads for these boards.
Wonder if you get a "quick-start" guide? - or something. Maybe i'm wrong in thinking that the NEKO/open labs products are "extremely complicated" But perhaps the opposite is true?
So it looks like i could use "normal" VST's like EAST-WEST products (Symphonic choirs, Orchestral strings, etc)? If so, then, although expensive, is very upgradable and future proof (the XXL has a 2.8 quad core and 2 TERABYTES of disk space
Or the NEKO lux:$24,000 http://www.openlabs.com/neko-lux-overview a snip:)
Re: KARO, would be very interested if You could do something like a Giant Choir/Symphonic-Strings EXi or something. I, personally don't want too many more "synth-sounds on the OASYS, as I feel that area has been covered, with your GRANULAR, and Korg's MOD-7, AL-1, MS-20 EX, PolysixEX ( as well as the "synth" itself).
Bring me Guitars, Acioustic/electric, World instruments, And Choirs, Sounds you can "PLAY, as indeed you have done with your strings, and Piano/Electric piano etc, though i haven't tried any of these yet.

Sharp wrote:I thought that too until I played one. Check out this video tutorial on their interface called “RiFF”. It's worth sticking it out and watching the entire video as it gives you a good idea of how easy it is to operate the Neko, and how even in live use it will operated like a standard workstation.

OT: I always become nervous once I hear "XP" or similar abreviations together with making music ...
Good news on the expansion of the Karo-Team. And I'm very much looking forward to more Mod7-developments. Mod7 is the Exi I like most on the Oasys and I think it has lots more potential than reveiled yet.

Couldn't be more agree

And the "keyword" for me is fragmentation. There is a very good reason why Windows XP is divided in only 1 or 2 partitions, while recorders who are actually ment for music production (for ex. VS-2480 CD) is divided in 7-8 a' 10 GB each. I have never experienced fragmentation so far due to simple steps/routines to avoid that in the first place, but the larger disk, the larger risk. And especially with Windows XP who contains all kinds of other programs/files who is stealing both RAM and CPU resources and who leaves behind fragments all over the place. To be a little sarcastic, there is a reason why air traffic controllers are not using Windows as OS, but a OS system that is designed solely for that purpose and then with sufficient computer power. As far as 3. party plug-ins for PC-systems, these plug-ins are normally using RAM/CPU resources from the computer, which then reduces the averall performance on that machine. While 3. party plug-ins for the VS-2480 has it's own processors on the "card" itself and the quality is, quote: top-notch—thanks to 56-bit internal processing and up to 96kHz sound quality.
But don't get me wrong, programs like Digital Performer, Logic, Pro-Tools and so on are most likely far better for sequensing than any workstation (incl. even the Fantom G) It is the OS platform and the computer setup in which they are often used that is a turn-off for me. Sequensing on one hand and recording/editing audio is after all two different things.
