What Do I Need?

Post by ruiner28 »

To run my kp3 into cubase5? Will I need a mixer? I would not mind getting one cause it would be so much easier to hook up my mic/guitar and kp3 and any other additional hardware I may acquire later daown the road. I would like to be able to play a section of music that I record in cubase and sample it on the kp3 then add some effects to it and record it back into cubase5....will I need a mixer to do this? Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

The minimum you need is a USB cable. You can import and export .wav and .aif files directly to and from the KP3 from the computer, up to the maximum size allowed by the KP3 for each sample pad. Then you can resample with effects to another pad and export it back.

However, if you want to use the KP3 to do effects for full songs without breaking them up into small samples on the pads, then you could use an audio input box with at least 2 inputs and 2 outputs and use it as an external effect, where all the tracks are played and recorded with cubase alone - no sampling/resampling on the KP3 needed.

No mixer is needed for anything you describe. A mixer could be useful if you want to directly send a mix of audio directly to the KP3 without using cubase.

I would suggest that you start with a USB cable. Then research the best audio input/output box for your overall recording needs, since there are so many options available. Some mixers do double duty, with both mixing and USB audio I/O. Some synths like the Novation Xiosynth and X-station also do audio I/O too. It's better to spend time reading up on all the options before you buy anything, otherwise you can spend a lot of money and get something that still might not work well for everything you want to do.
