Had EMX for a week, and now know whats weak
First of all, the drum samples is really poor, they suck big time actually, lucky me Ive got tons on my computer but I find it hard to find those old cards. And those from UK on ebay costs prices beyond reason for that old technology.
Second, You can only have 3 effects total/pattern, and only 1 per drum/synth channel, this really pisses me of or am I wrong, can u have more? It wouldn't be hard to make these machines so that you cold use 3 on all sounds, individually, its just retarded not to make it so.
Its a problem for me, i most often use minimaly; 1 eq and 1 reverb on everthing so this was quite lame, i can't inside the emx so i feel limited as hell. I could reverb and eq everything in my computer but that sort of puts all the fun out of having this toy in front of you, then it simply makes it a sequencer, whick I already have i my computer, a couple of them. Thinking of selling it right away hehe, if i dont manage to get some fat base out of it.
Although I tried it out today on a small PA, 2x 500W subs and 2x 400W tops, dynacord f150, and it gave out totaly nice sound!

Well first off, you can tweak the sounds off of it if you find the sounds "poor" for you. It's just unfortunate we cant use the filter section for it.
secondly, you can have the fx chained to have 3 working in total per part
lastly, it does sound good despite its limitations and it's quite unfair to be comparing it against a computer DAW because it was made for a specific purpose. If you want to use your computer samples, pair it with an ESX so you can load your collected construction kits.
Personally, I can compare all I want between the EMX and a computer but it's useless. As a live performer, the EMX brings a lot on the table and I decided on getting one because most of us have been spoiled by computers these days we don't stretch our minds to create something from a limited palette. If you bought it solely for composing and not for live use, maybe I'd also suggest for you to sell it but if you have no hardware boxes/synths, the EMX can still hold its own having the 5 synth parts based on MMT which is also on the korg Radias.

when you talk about "those old cards" i hope you're not thinking of trying to load new samples to Smart Media. if so, you're out of luck: the EMX is ROM-based; you can't add any new samples. for that, you would've been better off with the ESX.rbss wrote:First of all, the drum samples is really poor, they suck big time actually, lucky me Ive got tons on my computer but I find it hard to find those old cards. well for $400 what did you expect? not even my $1500 monomachine has reverb per part (but it does have a lot of other fx per part)...
and if that's smartmedia cards you are refering to, they will only be useful to save your patterns, the EMX can't import samples (that's what the ESX is for)..
for $400, the EMX/ESX are great machines. if you want more pro, price goes up. it's that simple

to further that, it is normally bad practise to have a different reverb on every part. it is redundant and isn't good for a cohesive sound.
if you send different amounts of the different parts to the same reverb it will sound as if they are in the same acoustic space, and thus all belong in your song.
and even the £800/$1000 radias only has two effects per part, and one across all. and it only has four parts!
it often produces more interesting results to be making music under limitations.. taking away the limits often leaves musicians with no idea where to even start

What, so im stuck with those shitty drums??? I recon i cant load anything to the synth, but the drum slots???killedaway wrote:when you talk about "those old cards" i hope you're not thinking of trying to load new samples to Smart Media. if so, you're out of luck: the EMX is ROM-based; you can't add any new samples. for that, you would've been better off with the ESX.rbss wrote:First of all, the drum samples is really poor, they suck big time actually, lucky me Ive got tons on my computer but I find it hard to find those old cards. yes, you're "stuck" with those drums. none of the sounds in the EMX can be replaced. you cannot load your own samples, not even drums -- it's impossible. in order to alter the drum sounds, you can change their pitch, envelope, and add effects and/or modulation, but that's it.rbss wrote:

also, don't forget that you can use the 5 synth parts to create your own drum sounds from scratch.
you can't load anything at all exept pattern data (meaning if you make 256 patterns, you can save them to smartmedia and make more patterns). do yourself a favour and READ UP on the product before buying and thentalking crap about equipment. if you had done even the slightest research, you would have found that the ESX is the one that can load samples.rbss wrote:What, so im stuck with those shitty drums???
