Ive just received the nanopad and nano controller for a music mad brother.

I tried to connect them to ableton and reason but no joy. I dont have an ASIO soundcard and from what I can gather this is essential, here I get a bit lost. Can I just connect, say a MAYA44 USB(external) to solve this problem or do i need to install internal hardware or software

To be honest I new to all this so please forgive me if I have the complete wrong of the stick.
