Microkorg XL editor has Program/Timbre Randomize ?

Post by Daz »

See the button at the top left ?

... I wonder if that will find it's way into the R3 and Radias editors ? I don't remember seeing it in the Radias editor, although maybe I am running an older version.

Nope, that's new for the MKXL only. The R3 and Radias editors don't have it.

Yeah, I'd like to see that feature as well....

Also, I'd like to see a little bit of color added to the editors. Just a subtle hint of color would better help to group the controls and make the editors look fantastic.

Another nice-to-have would be for the flyover for a given button, knob, etc., to include at least some portion of the text from the manual.

(Um, yeah, I design UIs for a living, so this is my "thing"....)

I also notice that the 'punch level' is in the mixer section, which is much better because the punch click does actually go through the filters (great for physical modeling, if only we could modulate the punch level with velocity). in the 'amp' section it was a bit misleading....

but a randomise function would be nice to have

Are you saying the punch level goes through the filter even when the "Drive/WS Position" is selected to PreAMP and not to Pre Filter ???

yes, that is exactly what I am saying. it is not part of the waveshaper, nor the amp section... it is actually a source.

the default position is PreAMP and this is when I first noticed it...

all the punch parameter does is put a single cycle square wave at the start of the note.

Korg apparently was a bit indecisive about where the punch parameter belongs. In the R3 editor it was in the Mixer section.

By the way, the punch parameter isn't really a good way to add punch to the sound. It's much better to have appropriate amp envelope settings and to use a compression effect with tube style overdrive.

I'm sure that a lot of people would like to have a Phatness knob too, but unfortunately, you still need to understand all the different ways to get a thick sound instead of thinking that you can narrow it down to a single parameter. You need to understand unison, wave shaping, PWM, FM, waveforms, DWGS, detuning, multiple timbres, mod sequencing, envelopes, filters, effect, and virtual patches to get a thick sound with a lot of motion.
