Can the M3 be made to behave like an M50? Load M50 Combis?

Post by NuSkoolTone »

I know this sounds backwards, but I basically want an M50 with the M3's Sampling and Trigger pads.

I played the M50-88 and the M3-61 back to back and MUCH preferred the M50.

I know it's odd to say that because the M50 is a stripped down M3, but they are just a totally DIFFERENT experience to sit down and play! It's not the keybed, because generally I don't like weighted action. Though I must say it was nice!

The only thing I can come up with is the difference I'm feeling is Karma, and not for the better. Perhaps it's what turned me off the first time to the M3?

I guess my question is can the M3 Load the M50 Combis and have Karma just act like the 2 Arpeggiators?

Well, you could get the M50 and a Nano Pad (or M-Audio Trigger, or even Axiom) for the drum pads that you want, and then get a software sampler like Kontakt, Halion, etc--or get an MPC for the pads & sampling in one unit, depending on what your needs are for samples. Just some ideas to consider...

Good luck with making your decision!

Yeah some of that stuff could be cool in the studio, but I'm looking for live and minimal schlep. Totally am NOT going to bring computers/laptops on stage with me. Sure would be COOL if the nanopad could interface with the M50 through it's USB port though! THAT I would do.

I really wish we got 4 pads on the M50 instead of those stupid chord assign buttons!

well M50-88 and M3-61 have different keybed action, a fair comparison would be between M50-88 and M3-88 that has a different keybed than the M3-61.

anyway, regarding pad, you could afford a MIDI controller with pad and link it to the MIDI IN of the M50, maybe you can find one smaller enough to be kept direclty over M50 panel.

Trust me, it's not the keybed action that was the difference. It's that the M3 feels like it's on autopilot, where the M50 still feels like I have some control over it.
