The good and bad of the "M50 idea"

Post by klarnet basowy »

I double this thread from karma-labs forum, to discuss also here: ;)

...
I hope this afternoon to demo the M50.
Anyway, I want to share with the forumers my "a priori" ideas about the most important "good and bad" of this workstation, which is indeed something new in the budget workstation market.

The good:
- same rompler engine of the "almost-flagship" ws, the M3 (same sounds! except maybe for D/A final conversion)
- programmable arpeggiator (compared to the M3 )
- same sequencer of M3
- finally, empty slots for user sounds :P (Tr doesn't have it)

The bad:
- no aftertouch: this is IMHO the major flaw (I don't care for sampling option), because aftertouch is an unreplaceable expression tool.

I have in these days the idea to downgrade from the M3 to the M50, because I use the M3 very little, and for what I do or will do M50 will suffice. But this aftertouch things really stop me in doing this.

Your opinion?

BTW: I'm convinced that M50 is a bargain, same EDS engine of the M3 for this price is an exceptional thing. I want only to see the ideas about this "new idea" of budget workstation (it's quite different from the idea behind the TR, Triton-Le line).

I have an M3-61, and plan to use it for live performance with the band.

Aftertouch is not a deal breaker for me, but I agree, it's would seem to me that on a workstation the calibre of the M50, it would be an included feature.
That said, it does have a joystick, and that is a feature I use constantly, and can function like aftertouch if needed.

I wouldn't have bought the M3 if my TR had USER slots. However, I'm glad I own the M3, it's a wonderful synth, and hopefully, will be even better later this week when Korg releases the newest update.

The Karma feature is absolutely cool, but useless to me on stage, an arp would be sufficient, in the studio though, it rocks!

You didn't understand (this does not surprise me)
Anyway, for what concerns the rompler engine, M3 and M50 are exactly the same (except polyphony)

Ps. I don't want this thread to be flamed by you, THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

I was led to believe that it was the M50's keybed which could not produce aftertouch and that if another keyboard that ha aftertouch was connected via MIDI that aftertouch can be achieved.

Yes, this is true - the voice architecture can certainly respond to aftertouch messages. Even poly-after-touch message if you have a keyboard that send those!
