Electribe MX, Drum and Bass!! plz help

Post by SoundUser »

Anyone got any advice for a new comer??

Im trying to make drum and bass basslines, but im just going round and round in circles.

I know that sines waves are for suby bass and then I wanna blend it with some saw or square waves with some FX to add some texture but like I say im going around in circles!

Everything I make sounds really electro/80s when im tryin to make something grimy and dark

Any advice would be great

you could try having several synth parts dedicated to the bassline, like a sub bass, and a second synth doing mid bass and perhaps a third for higher or more distorted sound. this way you can tweak all of them independently for max impact. they dont all have to play the exact same thing either, but you can get fat layered sound by doing that.
In my experience ive found that the emx doesnt always put out a strong sine wave at very low frequencies, and it all sort of feels very hit and miss. ive gotten some super strong, low frequency sounds using the ring mod, but only with certain filter settings, its kinda unpredictable.. move the filter a single step and the sweet sound will disappear totally. get used to motion sequence the filter and envelope settings on each note/step for max precision. if you do get a good sound, it can be helpful to adapt the drum parts around it, rather than try changing the bassline and losing what you just found

overall, making basslines, especially those dark and evil drum and bass ones is very difficult, and is really pushing the limits of the emx, and is the hardest thing in dubstep and most dnb, no matter what kind of equipment you got. so, stay in there, and keep at it, and read up some tutorials (even if they are for different synths and software, just to get tips)

it might also help to download some drum and bass sample cds, the sort of thing with loops and basslines. listen to the bassline loops on their own, study and try and recreate them as best you can

there's really nothing special about dnb bass. If everything sounds liek electro then your filter is turned up way to high. The trick to creating potent textural stuff is to do motionsequences that go with the flow of the track. If everything you do sounds like the base electribe sound then you have much to learn still. Stop banging your head and keep practicing!
