Hi all, I now have my PA1x back from Korg UK after repairs, it was faulty when I bought it second hand. It's working fine now and I thought it was great until I watched the Tyros 3 demo video!
Anyway, it occurs to me that it should be possible to pinch the sounds from another keyboard by using the onboard sampler. I have a Yamaha PSR 9000 and some of the sounds are better. Two that I like are vintage guitar open and sweet soprano sax. I am surprised not to find references on this forum to sampling other keyboard sounds. Is it done? Is it taboo?
Is it impossible?
The other point is EMC Styleworks. I have tried the demo from Korg Italy and it seems rubbish to me. It cannot work with PA1x styles and is too crippled as a demo. Darned if I will pay full price for it unless people can tell me it is very good. Does anyone like it?
Cheers for any replies.
Bruce.
Sampling other keyboard sounds and EMC Styleworks

Hello Bruce,
It's not quite that simple I'm afraid. Although you could simply record a note from your keyboard then use it as a sound sample it won't sound like your other keyboard.
Manufacturers use some in depth techniques for sampling instruments across many dynamic ranges, trying to capture subtle nuances and with multi-samples to allow for things like key off and sound dynamics.
Much of the money that you pay for your instrument goes towards the cost of creating the samples and sounds that you hear.
Also bear in mind that the RAM (memory) available to storing sounds and samples in the PA1X is limited and it wouldn't be practical to store too many.
With regard to comparing to other keyboards like the Tyros bear in mind that these instruments are all at the top of their manufacturers ranges. All of them are tremendous pieces of kit and are very capable of sounding amazing. When I first got my PA1X it took me some time to really get to know and love it. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses but in my opinion none are truly better than the other. They're all fantastic.

No problem Bruce. I'm glad you're enjoying your new PA1X. It's an amazing piece of kit.
I've had mine since they first came out and I'm still learning new techniques on it. It just gets better and better. I keep considering whether there's anything I need to upgrade to but frankly I think it still hold it's own at the top with all of the other. It's just that it's a steep learning curve to get the best from it.
