How to do M3 update

Post by mart »

How to update the operating system on the M3? Where do I find a folder M3SYS and how can I unpack this? I found from korg.com only a readme files which didn`t start the update process. And where from I`ll find system version 1.0.1, 1.2.0, 1.0.3, 1.0.4 and 1.1.1 updates?
Desperately asking for your help,
Mart

OMG, please, try to do it by yourself.
On the Korg website, all is explained in deep details!

Here you find the link I fond on the M3 page on Korg.com website, under "For The Product" -> "Download" section http://www.korg.com/service/downloadinfo.asp?DID=1383
Then you download this file: http://www.korg.com/downloads/pcmac/M3_V120.zip

Opening the zip I clearly see a readme file explaning all the operations you have to do, it's named "HowToUpdateM3.pdf", just follow these instructions!!!
And, of course, there is always the manual, with its "Upgrade OS" section.

Sorry if I haven't been kind, but when I read question saying "I can't do anything" I never belive it's like that. BTW, if you need any kind of help, just ask.

Yep...listen to Diego. Ditto the OMG!

All you need to know is there in the update files and it's easy and foolproof.

You can't miss the M3SYS stuff if you unzip the download.

Thanks for your answer

This page gives me only readme files. This is only some text in synth terms. This is not a manual, these are not update instructions and this is not executing the update process. Appers text " File/path not found" over 30 times of trying. What`s wrong?

This should have come with your download:

How to Update the Operating System on the M3
This download contains a folder named "M3SYS".
Copy the “M3SYS” folder from your computer onto any USB storage device (MS-DOS formatted).
Important: Always back-up your sounds before doing an OS update. Be sure to save your PCG file to some form of USB media before proceeding, just in case. You can use the “Save PCG” or “Save All” commands found in Media mode.
Installing the new Operating System:
1) Insert the USB storage device containing the [M3SYS] folder.
2) Turn the M3's power ON.
3) Select GLOBAL mode and execute the command "Update System Software" from the upper RH Page menu.
!!!CAUTION!!! DO NOT TURN OFF THE POWER DURING THE COMMAND EXECUTION.
4) The system will begin loading automatically.
5) When done, the display will read Completed. Please turn the power off, and then turn it on again. The M3 will start up using the new operating system.
Note: The message of "File/path not found" may be displayed when the command is executed.
Execute the install command again in that case.
If the error message "Error in reading from medium" or "Can't update system" is displayed, please redo the copying of the [M3SYS] folder to a USB storage device, making sure to first delete the folder from the USB device, and execute the install command again. If you still do not succeed, please try a different USB storage device, and redo the whole procedure

This page gives me only readme files.
That's odd. Every OS update I've ever gotten from Korg (perhaps a dozen or so for several products) always has "how-to" instructions.

It sounds like you didn't read or understand the readme file which is the "how-to" instructions. There isn't a readme in the world that is actually the executable file that installs on a computer. Readmes only tell you about the new or revised or updated features in the attached software, bug fixes, install procedure, etc.,.

And they are indeed in the V1.2.0 zipped file. Perhaps you unzipped incorrectly or with some out-of-date arcing software. And the instructions are clear and simple to follow.

Also, have you ever thoroughly RTFM the M3 manual?

M3 Updates

Post by BillyB »

I updated my M3-73 but found the new sounds I added disappeard on me. I am not sure if it happened after I powered it down of if maybe in saving a sequencer file it somehow restored it to the original settings san the new sounds???...happened twice, but now it seems to have taken and the sounds remained...some nice one too I must say...

I do know that before doing any changes to anything, either system or adding new pcg's from usb you should always save all your pcg's to a save file so you can retrieve it later, usually updates of any kind will initialize your sounds, after that you could just reload them from your saved pcg file

***Definitely***

And I believe Korg clearly says that in all their instructions.

If your M3 generates bread & butter then you should follow much more stringent archivial methods. See magazines like EM, Mix, SOS, etc. for various ways.

At least, do a "Save All" every few minutes or after every significant tweak as you go along. Then arc everything each day to CD or DVD.
