shouldn't be an issue for right now i guess, i think they sell adapters at guitarcenter.

and thanks i'll def buy some smartmedia cards too.

as far as using hardware live - is it best to just record your beats/rhythms for a whole song and play along with it? or do you guys prefer to have someone hit triggers to play different loops and such?
I think he means xD to smart media adapter.SM is quite rare and usually expensive but you can get an adapter and xD memory which is cheaper and easy to get hold of (try ebay). ;)

i'm still wondering if i need a seperate A/I if i use my EMX1 as a midi controller in addition to a drm machine

(triggering keyboard parts i program in logic/garageband on my macbook through the emx1 on stage for live performance).

or if i just hook up the laptop to the emx1, and the emx1 to the pa

You will need some type of midi interface to connect your laptop to the EMX.

Cheap USB to midi cables are available, but more pricey modules are availble if you plan to expand the number of midi devices to be controlled on stage.

It is not possible to control the EMX from your laptop without a midi cable since the EMX has no USB/firewire port.

Although from what I understand, a laptop is not really necessary. The EMX is capable of being programmed (and having these patterns saved to the EMX without the memory cards) for drum loops and synth loops and can be triggered on stage without a laptop.

If you want to use the EMX knobs and buttons to control things on your laptop, then a midi cable/interface is essential.

I still think a real drummer would be easier.
You know, you are gonna have to read some manuals and tutorials at some point anyway, might as well start now.
