help - joystick problem -- FIXED!

Post by KrzysiekK »

Hello,

today I turned on my TEX and noticed that joystick started to behave in unusual way - when I turn it Y or -Y, it also sends few pitchbend commands in about a halfway. I can hear it when I play TEX soundmodule as well as I can see it on MIDI monitor when MIDI commands are being sent.

Here's the dump - I did a move from center down to -Y (there's a weird pitchbend command sent):

I am pretty sure I move it stright up/down. It never happened before.

I tried factory reset (0 + Enter) but it didn't helped.
What may be the cause (mechanical problem or electronics)?

regarding the issue - I am thinking of something might caused TEX OS went crazy. I would like to try OS update but I am afraid of the fact I won't be able to go back to 1.02. This version has has a precious bug (for me :) ) which might be fixed in 1.05 ...

i've not come across this problem before... but if your TEX is not under warranty the insides of the joystick are very easy to get at - all you do is remove the metal plate on the back and you will see the insides of the joystick..... i would imagine if it is a mechanical or electronic problem then it would be fairly obvious to see

Thanks for encouranging words. But, as I remember, the metal plate (removable for MOSS installation) is in the middle of the instrument so when I remove it, I can see a part of triton's MB only through the hole (my model is 88, maybe things look different in 61/76 model) - the joystick is to the top left of the instrument, so it seems like I have to get rid of all those screws and remove the cover to see joystick inside. By the way, I admit that I've found several threads on this forum regarding the issue, but none of them explain the cause of problem.

More on the problem: when the joystick is in the position where unwanted pitchbend message is being send, I noticed that keeping the joystick in this Y place and moving it in X axis does nothing - so it seems like pitchbend message is "locked" in this particular Y position. More worying is the fact that sometimes after moving in Y axis and returning to the center, the fake pitchbend message is delayed (as if strange buffering was involved)... anyway I have to fix it.

I got a similar problem, Im not quite sure it is the same exact issue but here it is :

After playing with the joystick, sometimes (1 out of 10) the sound is still pitchbended (stucked detuned) even if I dont touch to the joystick at all after this. I try moving it back , doesnt fix the issue. Even changing the program doesnt help. All I got to do is wait... this is annoying live.

Is it the same kind of issue^^^

Hello, there is surely one common thing: a mysterious delay before centering the pitchbend (i.e. when 8192 value is being sent) - this delay occurs to me as well but only when I move +Y and then return the joystick to the center. The delay time is variable and lasts up to about 1 second. However the joystick works fine on X axis - I didn't noticed any problems. Regarding unwanted pitchbend messages on Yaxis - in my case the problem occurs everytime in the same Yaxis points. I guess there is no rule for incorrect joystick behavior - when it goes crazy, different things may occur to different people. The question is - what went wrong? After opening Triton, if I will be able to fix the problem myself, I will post information on this forum. Otherwise I will send it to service and put proper information about damage nature according to the service's statement.

FIXED!!!

Post by KrzysiekK »

Thanks God I fixed the problem myself without need to send it to service!

That was a broken brown cable which comes together with 2 yellow cables into the +/- X circuit mounted to joystick Y lever. After seeing this I could imagine why I got pitchbend 0 or 8192 values when I moved joystick +/- Y: the brown cable was simply loosing contact causing "binary", "interfering" pitchbender signal. The pictures (you can see white plug unplugged from pitchbend circuit, prepared to get fixed):

So what I did was dismantling the metal contact outside the white plug. Here's the picture of this contact:

Next step was to clean the contact by removing the remains of brown cable with a pin.

After preparing the cable, I put it into the contact and soldered carefully. Last step was to put the repaired cable+contact into white plug.
