whelp, my R3 will be here in a couple days...
Any advice from the R3 owners here? I'm not new to synthesis, but I've never touched the R3...can't wait to dig in...the only standalone synths I've owned are the moog opus 3 (given away by my drummer to his brother) and the korg micro-preset (not exactly flexible...but it is warbly and broken!)
I have an EMX, and have used reason's synths for years...love the subtractor...
just wondering if anyone has any lil tricks they wanna share?

Anyway, I would recommend just to install editor software on your PC, and start experimenting - this is the best way to learn synthesis.
And don't be afraid to make something radical and unusual - this is what synthesis is all about.
My gear: Roland Fantom x8 - Korg Radias - Access Virus b - Roland Jp-8000 - Moog da Rogue

Yeah, spend some time with the arp,it's excellent. And plus one for the editor, that'll show you whats going on under the hood
Check the fx out as well,it's got the kp3's core fx and i think it can do what the kp3 can (in terms of the fx).
Try plugging something into the audio inputs and recording that with the formant motion recorder. Now play around with the modulators settings and listen to the way it affects the sound of the recorded phrase.
Works well with drum loops

It's different with the R3 as you can almost treat the phrase like an oscillator. It's one synth that is capable of creating 'never heard before sounds'.djezballz wrote:that's cool, I always liked rockin some rex loops thru the VC in Reason...nice to be able to do that here...
thanx for the tips...I saw the stciky, but this is more what I was asking, steer me towards some of the highlights of this synth...
keep 'em coming please!
The grainshifter is a great effect.Knob assign is really useful, you can assign any of the most useful page menus controls to the 4 knobs (such as fx parameters) for live performance but it's also a great way of creating new sounds..Shame the R3 hasn't got a shift function so you can assign 8...
Best thing i can say is experiment.I've gotten a lot of good sounds out of mine and i've barely scratched he surface to it.There's a lot to it and because of the audio inputs, vocoder, formant motion synthesis, mmt technology and fx it feels almost limitless,a really powerful sound design tool.
Probably my favourite synth atm and i'm getting plenty out of it.Really shines as a synth

should have ordered from sweetwater or anywhere but Musician's "friend"...
ordered on thursday, paid for overnight del, they never shipped it. so yesterday, I called to say WTF?!? and some douche named Cory assured me I would have it today. Called back and it is shipping today! dicks. I got my money back for shipping ($50) and wanted another $50 for being lied to. They gave me $30...
oh well... as long as I have it tomorrow... If not, I'm cancelling my credit account w/ them and moving on.

Did you get it?
One other thing i think worth mentioning is the mod sequencer.I was wondering how to create acid lines on the R3 and within a few minutes of first using it i had one.So simple!Activate the mod seq,arm and record the knob movement.I tweaked the filter cutoff which gave me a rhythmic bassline, then i added some resonance and effects and hey presto! The stereo wah is a good effect for adding some dirt to the bass.
Definitely read the manual. There's a lot of stuff in there you might miss otherwise

I had the same thing happen last year ordering a Nord Lead 3 Rack from Music 123, ordered on a Thursday morning (well before their cut-off time for shipping the same day), but they dragged their feet "processing" the order and it didn't ship until the next day, which means I didn't actually receive the synth until the following Monday. I would think if an order came in specifying overnight delivery it would get priority treatment. Obviously not... and unfortunately they would only refund half the shipping cost. So basically if you're going to have anything sent "overnight" best to place your order no later than a Wednesday morning, otherwise there's no guarantee you get it before the weekend. Needless to say I haven't ordered anything from them again.djezballz wrote:should have ordered from sweetwater or anywhere but Musician's "friend"...

well, It came finally...unfortunately, I ended up in the hospital for the last 3 days...had a very bad allergic reaction to something and ended up with a rash on 80% of my body that felt like the worst case of poison ivy with a severe sunburn on top of it. My wife brought the manual in for me so I read it about 10 times...I just got home, and I'm exhausted. I'll play with it tomorrow..thanks for the input, guys...

How are you finding it?I love the fx.The waveshaper and unison can fatten up a sound to a point it but i've only just started digging into it.i think running it through a tube preamp would make this synth sound phenomenal. It's no doubt a performance synth and you an get a lot out of one patch with all the modulations and knob assign.
Mine's growing on me,i hope the same is true for all the other R3 owners out there

Can't argue with that!I was playing around with it yesterday and it did remind me of the mkorg a little,it is possible to get that same kind of ballsy sound with the waveshaper.Still a lot of exploring to do and there is so much scope with this synth.Next i'm going to route the output back into the R3 so i can record it with the formant motion recorderdjezballz wrote:I'm loving this thing.... very flexible, and it sounds very nice...warm and rich in harmonics. The presets are cheesy, but that's what INIT patch is for! I love the Analog tune setting, as I love that motion in pads.
