Chord Display

Post by davedamn »

Hi

Yet another question. Only had this board a few days so excuse the ignorance.

If I embed lyrics into a midifile using cakewalk and then play the file on my PA1X Pro they appear in the display just fine.

If I embed Chord symbols in the midifile using cakewalk and then play the file on the keyboard they do not appear in the display

1. Can chord symbols be displayed if so how?

2. Is it a problem with how cakewalk puts in chord symbols

I have noticed that on reloading midifile into cakewalk the chord symbols are missing they only seem to save in cakewalk native format.

What is a sequencer that would be compatible with embedding chord symbols.

I dont want to use a txt file as I want the chords & lyrics to scroll during playback as I have the worlds worst memory

Thanks Dave

Hi Dave,
I too use Cakewalk (Sonar 7) and the entering chords will not work, as you have found out.

As far as I know there is a program you could try which might do it and it's called GN MIDI,
http://www.gnmidi.com/ I have a registered version, but you know what I have never used it as I tend to use my laptop for my charts and other things.

It might be time to get it out and try it.
Hope that helps some...

There was also another program I was going to use with a Tyros keyboard, which DID allow editing of lyrics and adding chord meta events, but I would have to track back and see if I can re-discover it which might take a while.

Chords

Post by davedamn »

Thanks Dennis

I do have cubase which I might try. It's just that I've never liked the program and prefer cakewalk pro audio 9. The new sonar is too much like cubase for me I just cant seem to take to it. So I stick with the old faithful pro audio 9 warts and all

Displaying Chords on PA1x

Post by davedamn »

Hi,

Discovered how to do this. Chord symbols in Cakewalk are not a proper meta event as regards a standard midifile and so are not saved with the midifile.

If you embed text events in the file then they are saved as meta events and the PA1X reads and displays them as chord symbols and they appear above any lyric events you have put in the midi file on the display

Dave,
When you say embed them in the midi file in cakewalk, which editor view are you using and what is your method.
Thanks

Hi Miden

Unfortunately the only way in cakewalk is to use the event list. Create a new event at the relevant bar/beat you want a chord, change it into a text event by right clicking it. Then in the data field type your chord as text. When you load this midifile into the PA1X and select the lyric viewer the chords will be shown and highlighted as the file plays. If you have put lyrics into the midifile these will be displayed as well and the chords will appear above the lyrics. Works a treat just like a karaoke machine if you have a bad memory for lyrics and chords like I have. Although putting the chords and lyrics into the midifile in the first place is a pain in the butt.

Thanks Dave,
I too like to have chords and lyrics available for some songs, and I would not really thought of doing it that way, but after you explained it was like, duh! why didn't I think of that.
You are right, it WOULD be a PIA, but if it works, you only have to do it once!!
Thanks again for the tip.
Cheers
