I had to register when I saw this thread. Ok, this is worrying because the EXACT same thing has happened to my EMX1. It 'went' pretty much just after the warranty ran out. I bought my EMX1 brand new from a music store in the UK, never gigged/dropped/spilt on etc, nothing. It was just sitting there on my desktop doing its thing and then one day the lights flickered and it never worked again.

It's been in the box ever since. I did email Korg after it happened but they took a really long time to reply and the email didn't contain any clues as to what was wrong only that it sounded like I needed a new circuit board or something and I was given a phone number to ring.

I also lost my job pretty much at the same time so I gathered I'd have to fork out for P&P and then the cost of getting it fixed ( which I don't know what it will be ) so I just left it because of my current financial situation.

I'd still like to get it fixed though but I really don't want to be sending it off via post to Ireland with no clue as to how much it is going to cost me. What are the alternatives?

I think I will contact Korg again because clearly it's a very common issue and probably a build flaw by the sound of it. I certainly expected more than 2yrs life out of it that's for sure.

i don't want to explain the whole story here, if you need more
info go to yahoo groups, SX and search for 'fuse'.
Do you have a link? I tried Googling but I can't find anything like this.

I can't see how you can get it fixed for free. I have called Korg service department after being given the number via email and I have to pay for the labour charge ( £20 ) the cost of the fuse ( up to £5 ) and obviously postage and packaging to and from the service dept.

I can order a fuse but the guy explained that it's about half the size of a match-head and that he uses a magnifier to solder it after removing the old one. ( I can't even see where it is on the board )

I can't believe anyone ( unless they are very electronically competent can fix this themselves.)

I find a lot of this information very misleading. Nobody is willing to reply either. Odd.

Best to just send it off, and you do have to pay.

search in here for 'fuse'. it's a private group so you have to wait to get approved (i think), but the whole story is there if you are interested.

I would totally have to disagree with you on this one, bub. it's not best, unless you think the best is waiting a long ass time to get your box back and like getting ripped off.
and no you do NOT have to pay anything. ever. (this only applies to the states)
ok fine, don't believe your friends on the internet. believe the guys who are trying to get your cash.

STILL DON"T BELIEVE ME?
this is from JERRY the president of KORG USA on the yahoo forum i linked you to above:

Re: fix it yourself

Post by novaTRON »

welcome to novaTRON's DIY online manual for replacing the fuse on an EMX-1 or ESX-1!!!

step one, take the MX/SX apart, exposing this:
Image
step two, find the fuse location:
in the image we see the main board of an EMX-1 (THIS ALL APPLIES TO the ESX-1 as well)
there are 8 capacitors that are all same size- silver with a blue outer ring and a slash, drawn in pen.
something like this-
.. O
.OOOO
.. OOO

now then,
there is a single, smaller capacitor that is below these 8 larger ones

.. O
.OOOO
.. OOO
......o <ok...right there!
now, to the left of and directly next to this smaller one, is where the fuse lives

looky there, it says 'fuse1' right on the circut board.
final step: install fuse . use a 1.5A chip fuse (surface mount)

or bypass the fuse altogether!
in the image displayed you can see 2 gobs of solder where a wire was installed, to bypass where a fuse once lived. yes- no fuse in my MX!
it's been like that for over 3 years used (and abused) everyday, traveled on many flights (not carry on) played in the the direct sun many times and just generally put to the test.
but, you may not want to risk that, if not just put in a 1.5er

the fuse on my emx has been bypassed by this LONG ass time ago, it's free, it's easy if you know how to solder which is easy.... it runs fine, get over this we don't need to answer this question any more... either do it yourself for free or for about 2 dollars to have a fuse sent to you or ship it to korg for 2-6 months pay shipping, pay repairs... or take it to a service center. there's a LARGE list of service centers on their website at:

so yesterday it's happend to me...just before play, happly someone borrow me his EMX1 and I had my SM card with me with some current backup...but not the ultimate one...

this morning I was checking out all forums speaking about and then found this one...and YEAH!!...I discovered my problem wasn't so bad but I don't know which way are the best coz this machine are my tool for my main work as musican,I play everyweekend all around the Europe...

so which way for me are the best :

-buy fuses and fix it by myself?? it's saved and easy or not?
-send it to Korg service and get the free upgrade of my fuses and ask them to fix my old twisted knobs...how long can it take??
-go to any electronic shop service supply and them to fix faster than the Korg service

but I have 4 days to do something before my next gig...

well looks like you don't got an option. You won't get it fixed anywhere and I highly suggest NOT trying it yourself unless you have a high sense of manual dexterity, are able to take things apart remembering where everything goes and be able to put it back together.

You must also be skilled somewhat at soldering... the fuses are not like pop out ones you'd expect like in Christmas lights. They are actually chips on a board so you gotta be able to solder small contacts.

Good luck!

Hi Ruso ;)

Yes finally I follow the way of the reason as u wrote...I found my local Korg technical supply here in Cz...and sent it...coz was quite so hard to get the fuse, then they told they got it,so it was for me the best option...

just I push them to be more fast as possible coz it's my tool for work...

thx a lot for all help...anyway I'm so glad to find this forum speaking one my favorite machine and anything usefull about it...

  :)

Hi,

This photo come from my website.

I already sent two time my EMX buy new in 2004 to be repaired, and it need to be repaired a third time. The first time arrived during the garanty, the second out of garanty, the third less than 6 month after the last.

I do it myself, what can i do, when you buy a machin new and it don't work 8 month after, and now the cost to repaired it is to expansive i have bypassed the fuse, but the emx don't work fine since, i have to turn on and off a several time to have a "good" sound.

Imagine that i create a post on a french forum the 04/20/2005, on a machin from 2004, we are in 2010, i don't have and haven't had any solution from korg.

One of the first machin i bought new, and one who taking the most dust because i don't use it anymore, use less than 1 year always at home, with some other machine from other brand, never got this kind of unrepairable s**t with other brand like waldorf, roland, boss, yamaha, even ensoniq and e-mu, dave smith, access music, novation, sony...even with old and use machin...

Thank you korg...Never want to buy an other s**t like this.
