|
|
I guess most of you are familiar with the KRONOS introduction video at this years NAMM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHV3rnkGt3E&feature=watch_response_rev
From some postings here I got the impression that some do not know about the power of the KRONOS/OASYS EXis. Maybe it is also of interest for you how they sound not in the hands of one of the best keyboard players/presenters (Jack performing amazingly in the above video, always fun to watch and great to listen to him!), in the hand of an amateur / semi pro.
Here is a collection of different demo files and tracks, mostly recorded only by using OASYS' EXis, to which KRONOS users will have access to from day one.
FM / MOD-7 EXi
Let's start with good old DX / FM, here is a comparison of an OASYS MOD-7 combination competing with the "original" TX-816: http://blog.petermmahr.com/2007/10/02/tx816-vs-mod-7/
Kevin Nolan was so kind and add a link (mentioned in the above blog entry) on his website which gives everyone who is using MOD-7 access to appr. 200.000 (no typo, two hundred thousand) DX sounds. Do I see you asking "ah.. it only can do DX kind of FM?" - here is the answer: http://blog.petermmahr.com/2007/10/09/and-one-more-mod-7-demo/ ... factory sounds only! And as you see, this is already nearly 4 years old - I am very optimistic that the KORG programmers meanwhile did a great job in adding a lot of new sounds to KRONOS.
MS-20 EXi
You want to listen to another MOD-7 demo, then click here, the solo sound comes from the MS-20: http://blog.petermmahr.com/2007/10/12/guess-what-another-mod-7-audio-demo/
FM E-Pianos? Yes... of coourse: http://blog.petermmahr.com/2009/03/09/mod-7-new-efx-presets/
Wurlitzer FM, why not?
http://blog.petermmahr.com/2009/03/07/wurlitzer-comparison-update-ii/
Ok, but what about the other EXis? How does for example HD1 sound?
HD1 EXi
Here are two tracks I recorded last year by just using OASYS (sounds, internal effects, etc.) together with RMX. The latter getting probably getting obsolete with the newly added Drum Track, here we go
OASYS Combination with mostly HD1 sounds (all mentioned)
http://blog.petermmahr.com/2010/12/12/oasys-combination-demo/
You are interested in how HD1 lets human voices sound? Listen to this track. Fading between the different sounds was done by using the vector stick (HD1 and one MS-20 sound in use, ... OASYS, what else! .. I would say):
http://blog.petermmahr.com/2010/03/26/oasys-hd1-audio-demo-vector-joystick/
Another song done together with RC consisting mainly of OASYS sounds, HD1, AL-1 (bass) sounds: http://blog.petermmahr.com/2010/07/24/2k7-peter-mahr-richard-courtel/
Personally I liked MS-20 the most from the VA models, as it has lots of character and reminded me on my first KORG purchase in '82 (real MS-20 ). AL-1 - as shown by Jack Hotop - is very powerful, Polysix gives you those "classic" pad sounds, but over all my absolute favourite is MOD-7 followed by STR-1. The latter to be a bit tricky, but the more you get rid of the idea of using it just for micking real guitars (by they having a good example for that one on the blog as well, "guitar solo" played by Ebse) the sooner you are getting amazing results.
Peter / blogasys
ps: there are dedicated EXi chapters in the blog with some more audio material.

Hi Peter,
Was nice to listen to these again. All engines are unbelievable.
Sometimes when i sit at the O i dont know which one i want to go into and play around with...
I know you had 2 x O's at one stage if i remember correctly? Do you have an interest in Kronos? I will get an 88 Kronos to sit atop my O

Hi Peter!
I told you earlier, but now I will use other words:
Korg should hire you to demonstrate the Kronos: in that case M1 sales will be surpassed by far. Wow!
Magnificent music! (and audio quality...you know...my biggest frustration )
Kind regards,

Hi Pieter,
... how could I have missed that posting. What else can I say than "thank you" for these very kind words.
As mentioned somewhere else already - I would be glad if KORG will provide a KRONOS for reviewing and maybe record some demos.
Whatever... again, let me thank you, Pieter.
Peter

Hi Peter,
I always wanted and lusted over the Oasys sound engine, but couldn't justify spending that much on the board at the time,so I picked up a Motif an M3.The Kronos though is in my price range and I'll be picking this board up as soon as it's released.
My question is will this sound engine be identical to that of the Oasys? I specifically loved the brass on the Oasys, will this have the exact same brass sounds?

OASYS AL-1 mimic of an 80ies Synthesizer sound played by Thomas Dolby on Joan Armatrading's "I'm lucky": http://blog.petermmahr.com/2011/01/18/im-lucky-joan-armatrading-thomas-dolby/
bobbyland,
danatkorg in one of the threads posted here that they have implemented the same algorithms into KRONOS KORG used in their OASYS. The above sound therefore is quite easy to program and get with KRONOS. Furthermore Dan mentioned that KRONOS is using the same ADCs and DACs, beside the fact that the resolution in KRONOS is better than in OASYS I would expect it to offer the same sonic quality, at least!
