so do all parts send midi messages? i understand that there is a global channel and we can not send on multiple channels (missed oppurtunity?) but can I specify one part to send midi out?
say part 1-15 all have midi off and only part 16 will send messages, is that possible?

Every of the 16 parts has a fixed channel (part 1 = channel 1, part 2 = channel 2, etc.). Unfortunately, you can't limit the destination of a part to external MIDI only. You have to disable the internal sound source. This and the lacks of proper MIDI filtering makes the usage of external gear unnecessary complicated.

Yes, there is no way to turn off Midi channels, except by using the Part Mute.

interesting. it really does limit things though, huh?
so if I want to play a part on an external synth and record it in, I have to then disconnect the synth or move the sample to another part and then reprogram the original part for a different pattern part sound, yes?

Well, your external synth controller would be turned down while you played the part anyway, no?

so do i get this right: each pad is tied to a midi channel for sending and receiving midi - at least it seems to be this way all across the internet.
but what is the global midi channel for?

I have no idea, it seems irrelevant to me.

I'm saying the es2 would be my external synth controller. If it can't do this, there is little reason to use it for me and I will get the beat step pro.
