Making Korg PA Arranger Style on FL Studio

Post by Nemik »

Making Styles is here one of the HOT Topics.
Is many ways to do, is all depending on skills, tools, instument.
Professional musicians like do this directly on arranger.
Other like to just get it, load it and play :)
I believe many people want to know how this work, where to start..etc
I've been there. 7 months ago I didn't have a clue how can be done.
All my live I was very into Midi and now since I have KORG Pa600 I using my knowledge to enjoy very powerful, great Arranger.
Thank You KORG for flexibility.
I develop many ways to do styles, some easy and poor, some very hard but with great final effect.
I decide to help a little creating some basic tutorial.
Is not like perfect method, I know better ones, but showing on Fl Studio is giving chance to beginners see basics info how this work.
In future, if I find some extra time I planning to do Advanced Style Creation tutorial for more advanced users.
Feel free to ask any question.
So far I hope somebody will learn something.

PS. I you see any errors or something I miss it, please let me know. I been doing this in the middle of many different things and I am only Human.

Very nice Nemik. My only suggestion is you should note that on the PA600 (PA900 and PA3X) you can import all track eleements at one time with a MIDI file that contains all style elements identified by markers. You just need to use SHIFT EXECUTE on the IMPORT SMF page

That's going to be cover with Advanced tutorial, FL studio not saving Midi with markers, at least I couldn't. :)

Problem connecting keyboard to PC to use as MIDI controller

Post by TheoAsk »

Hi,

If somebody could tell me why I can't hear any sound coming out of my PC speakers upon connecting my Korg PA 50 SD as MIDI keyboard to FL Studio 11...I tried to change to Channel/port 1 or other but it still doesn't work..

I use a MIDI/USB cable adaptator but it worked before in FL Studio...

Here is the snapshot of the MIDI settings in FL Studio 11.. As you can see everything seems correct...Except that there is no signal. Do I have to change a setting on the keyboard itself?

Oh my God Nemik I inverted the MIDI IN and MIDI OUT cable on my keyboard! :-) I had to connect MIDI IN in the OUT port and MIDI OUT port into the IN port of the keyboard..Do you understand what I mean? It was so simple, yet I forgot about this..That's why I had no signal..Now no problem!

I will now test your tutorial...

-------

UPDATE: On my KORG PA 50 SD the procedure is slightly different but the principles are the same...I managed to make it work until when you say you have to select "Style Element Track Control."from the keyboard. I don't have this option so I cannot go forward in your tutorial. Can you explain what is this option for me and other users of PA 50 SD please?

Also I managed to create a few tracks with your tutorial. I saved VAR CV 1 to MIDI file format and converted to MIDO 0 format with your shareware.

But how do I convert MIDI file to STY file to load in Korg keyboard please?

I'm not sure, sorry never play on Pa50, but I check your manual and I got feeling you can get same when you go to Style Element Expression Control, sorry if this not be working.
Reason to go in my tutorial to Style Element Track Control is, because there when you change chord on Korg is changing in real time, mean from Korg speakers you hear whatever you play, but sending data from FL Studio is in C major, that's what make cool this option, before you save anything you can hear it.
FL Studio is working as external style variation.
Is for testing how changing chord impact on what you hear, is most tricky part in creating styles.
Example: on 3 bar your style track you add some solo, but if you try to play in different chord, is weird,...then you can select this bar only, put in loop leave chord on Korg which is weird and in real time using mouse correct notation. :)

Any chance your conversion s/w from SMF1 to SMF0 is stripping the markers. I use Sonar and it exports to SMF0 with all markers intact. ;-)

Edit: OK I just went over and checked the tech forums for FL Studio. It appears FL Studio does not support exporting markers in midi files. If this is the case I would not recommend using it for creating styles unless you are a masochist. ;-)

For the Pa50SD users there is a program available on the korg website that will allow you to create/edit styles using midi files. It's basic but will work perfectly well with a little patience and work.

I kinda knew it, experienced users going to jump with conclusion FL Studio is suck.
Maybe is, maybe not.
BTW conversion Midi1 to Midi0 is the most easy thing with creating style, is taking 5 seconds.
Markers....not all PA can import midi with markers.
If you look very close to this tutorial you find, is not about quick converting midi, is more like learn basics.

Yes I understand. I just wanted to make sure that PA600 users reading this who are unfamiliar with the style creation process know that it is possible to import the entire style definition in SMF0 format with markers at one time if they have a DAW capable of exporting the midi markers. it is a HUGE saving of time and effort if you can do this. The PA500 did not have this capability and it drove me crazy when I owned that keyboard. ;-)

Yes is possible to import midi0 with markers in one click, great feature,
but sometimes you miss something, you made style and in one of element something is not like suppose to be.
If you know basic info, is easy to recognize what and where is wrong.
Like they say, everything is easy until is difficult. :)
Believe me, unless you making style where is only drums, bass, strings and chords playing instruments, is always something need to be fix.
The fun is starting when you dealing with Guitar Mode tracks, or in track style is data to control effects, like Filter cutoff, release, even velocity.
Using DAW making easy to deal with.
The most important thing to learn from tutorial is to be available sync perfect all connection and be available edit style element in real time, not only notation, but also all parameters.
I've been thinking to do only one advanced tutorial on Ableton live 9, but then many Users was be lost, you got do baby steps first :).
