ESX - sampling function malfunction

Hi folks,
it is my first post here. i allready red through some other topics and discussions to learn more about the electribe esx.
few minutes ago i connected my laptop to the esx via line in and prepared for sampling. the first times the esx made very short cut samples like about only one second. and now, after i tried to find out the right setting, it is not possible anymore to activate the sampling mode (SHift+Rec).
Did anyone experienced something similar like that before?
What might have caused it? My laptop? (When I plugged in the audio cable into the esx, i forgot to switch from mic to line...)
