Split Keyboard For Live Performance

Post by bronxvalley »

Hi there,
I am trying to use my Kronos X with split keyboard in live performance where i can assign key range on left two octaves and add few sounds such as Fat Bass with Low Strings and Choirs. Would it be possible in Program mode? or how can we create in Combi mode?

Thanks

You are going to want to use a combi. There are several threads here that give details or just look in the paramter guid page 468 "Keyboard Zones"

To have a reliable setup I would prepare for a minimum of patchswitches. It just got to work without flaws.

Here it goes:
1. I would prepare each set of combinations for a certain midi channel.
2. You switch midi channel on keyboard for the setup you want

I think it's more reliable to just set it up than actually switch patches on samplers and other instruments you might have in realtime. And you will have no problem with anything cutting off sounding notes etc.

And memory is no object on modern computers now, just double what you need and let it be ready to roll all the time.

Setups with realtime patch switching I'm afraid you will make you hate the pc solution very quickly with not responding or not responding as quick as you want.

Just my $0.02...
There is such thing as Yamaha and Korg, but there is no such thing as foolishness when it comes to music.

Combi is the way to do it. AFAIK, the only type of program that allows splits is the CX3 engine, but then you have upper and lower tonewheel organs - no way to do other sounds.

It's pretty easy in both Combi and Song modes, however. Just set up any sounds you want to play to the Global Channel, and limit their upper/lower key range to limit them to the zone you want. Note, you can have them overlap for layers as well.

Actually, you can do splits/key zone layering between oscillators in HD-1 programs and splits/zone layering between EXi programs when in EXi mode. Check out the Program Basic tab - Key Zones section. But I agree that in this case for what the OP wants, Combi mode is the way forward.

A reasonably good tip is to hold the enter button and then press the key where you want the split.
