Record to DAW from Kronos, switching between audio and midi

i'm using Logic to sequence from the Kronos, interface in between. my Presonus Firebox interface recently crapped out and i'm now using a Roland QuadCapture.
i had/have USB from Kronos to computer for midi; L/R audio cables from Kronos to interface and USB from interface to computer for audio.
with the Firebox, i was able to switch between recording audio and midi solely by choosing audio or midi track within Logic. but with the Roland, i can't seem to do this. when i try to play a midi track i'm getting both audio and midi notes simultaneously. the only way to get around this issue is by switching between local on and off from the Kronos. i'm not sure why this is the case and i'd love to figure out how to avoid changing the local on/off settings in order to switch b/w midi and audio.
any suggestions?
thanks!

Hi. Not sure I understand. I use the same Firestudio mobile setup with my Kronos but with Cubase. With either DAW or Audio Interface (usb or fw) you would still need to arm an audio track before it would start recording audio. What I'm not understanding is when you say you're getting both audio and midi at the same time with the Roland but you didn't with the Presonus. You're recording both audio and midi at the same time? If so then you must have both an audio and midi track armed and assigned. if it's something else please clarify. Thanks
A lot of people tend to record that way in a DAW using local off on their workstation then selecting tracks to access the sounds on a particular midi channel.

Jacupmakeup I have a firebox I can't use since going to mountain lion. If you'll cover shipping I will send it to you. I have no use for it. Heck I still have the box it came in!
Or anyone else that wants it!

Yes, everything works fine as long as i switch between local on and off. I think this is actually how it is supposed to work, but for some reason, with the Firebox, i was able to switch between recording audio and midi without turning the local control on and off.
I think maybe this had to do with the Firebox using a firewire cable and the Roland using USB - the USB sending information both ways? not sure.
thanks!

Can you explain how you are setting up each track, input/output midi/audio.
If local control is off and you set up a midi track, Logic Patch thru has to be on to hear it. If you simultaneously set up an audio track (armed) and select the Aux of the midi channel for the input you will get sound also. If the midi track is not armed Kronos will produce no sound in either. My guess is that when you were using the firebox you had local control on… Just a guess?

He was using an aggregate audio setup which the OP is not. Also did you notice he muted the first track (Audio) when recording midi.

Ah! I see that's the way to avoid changing the local control status - you have to assign ports within Logic. I'm not able to assign ports within my utilities/audio-midi setup; the whole ports configuration is grayed out. i'll dtry to figure that out. I did have the local control on when using the Firebox.
ef_f: that video is great! i guess recording Kronos sounds as external midi is the smart way to go - i'm assuming the sound quality is the same either way?
Lou: i am using aggregate audio.
i just have to figure out how to configure the Kronos ports on my mac.
thanks guys

An External audio track is a good way to go. You get your MIDI recording and monitor audio all within one track. Also Logic handles aggregates very well. As long as you have the KORG Midi driver installed all of your port configuration is done within Logic.

local control just needed to be set to off. after all this time, this solved my problem
now on to the next issue: i can't mute my external midi tracks. does anyone know what's up with that?

Did you select Local Off and save it to your Global? It's hard to give answers without any info. Are you working from combi mode and loading programs or Song/Program mode? Are you working solely with Kronos? What is it that you are trying to do.. There are a few major selections that have to be made for everything to work well. Once you get a few working I suggest saving a working default template. This way every-time you open Logic your Global/Track preferences are there. Now as you find things that work for you just re-save the template. It will get better and better. If you don't do this you will go insane every-time you launch.. (I've been there)

thanks, Lou. looks like i've got it working now. the only issue now is not being able to mute external midi tracks within Logic. if anyone has a clue, i'm all ears.

If local control is definitely off that makes no sense. Is it while inputting or playing back a track? Have you tried muting from Kronos?

It's been a while since I've used logic so forgive me. When setting up an external instrument track does it also set up an AUX channel? If so that's where you should be doing the mute..
