Kronos Mk1 is Intel D510MO
Kronos X is Intel D525

can i install the Intel D525 and matching new ram in the Kronos mk 1???
Looking at pics they are identical in size and will mount one for one
cables look identical too ---so it should be a straight swap if you are running OS2.1--surely the OS will recognize the new board?

I have the original Kronos 61 and wish to keep it running out of warranty for years to come

I completely agree...Makes perfect sense to have a spare. Just in case.
It can always be sold later if unused. Or build another computer etc

Do you know if this Intel D525 motherboard used on Kronos X is direct drop-in replacement for original Kronos (Mk1)?

I think as long as the powersupplys are same part # on both the Mk1 and X

Isn't there a proprietary BIOS too? How will you get that in there?

There will be a proprietary BIOS in both versions of intel boards
but the idea is not to hack your Kronos Mk1 now but to have a spare main board
that you can take to your "authorized service centre" and they can install the proprietary BIOS along with the new main board in your dead Kronos.

Its all about future proofing yourself. A good example is Triton Extreme
If motherboard blows on the Extreme it can no longer be replaced as Korg do not carry spares any more. Unless your tech can do component level repairs your Extreme is worthless.

I'm interested as Korg have already replaced my Kronos Mk1 motherboard within a year of purchase and I don't want to be caught out a few years down the line with a £3500 investment (original + upgrades) that I cannot use!

Your local electronics tech can repair a motherboard !

More often that not, it's just a capacitor that's blown. An easy fix.

I bought a spare D510MO on eBay a few months ago, new in box for $38...there's one on eBay right now for $100 OBO, and it looks like they usually sell for $25 to $75...I haven't been able to find out (from Korg or anybody else) if it has to modified in any way to be used in the Kronos, but I guess I'll deal with that (with Korg Service) if I ever have a problem...

remember Korg only stock parts for 5 years from date of machine as rule of thumb
I would expect Korg to release the bios to authorized service centers after they run out stock?
