Kronos failed in live show situation

Post by ashboe »

My beloved Kronos became a laughing stock last night as I led an orchestra from the instrument...less than 100 bars into the overture, it restarted itself and then failed during system start up...only coming back up to speed in the third number of the show (after I had to load a custom pre-load.)
I don't know if it was a loose connection or a power surge, but the guy on the Roland Fantom had a right laugh at my expense, even the guy on the Alesis Synthstation using an iPad had a giggle.....

Luckily it was only Dress Rehearsal last night, but I sincerely hope it doesn't happen over the next 7 performances :o :o :o :o

Hi

Thats no good to read...particularly the guys with the other brand synths laughing at you, and of course the whole scenario would have been embarassing.

Good luck with the following performances, obviously the majority of us can't afford to carry around to Kronos for backup.

Just to make sure, it is not a power fault, plugin a ups for the next show between wall connector and your Kronos... Even a cheap one will do the job...

My K61 did the same thing at a rehearsal. It booted fine that night buf the next day I had a system startup failure and it is currently in the shop.

Never ever happened to me or to some other keyboarders I know.
So I am sure it is no software failure: must be a hardware issue.

IF something like that would ever happen to me, I would
a) use an UPS at gigs
b) if that was not the problem, I would not rest until I got the source of trouble and get it repaired or exchanged.

The very last thing I would do, is quit playing a Kronos ;-)

In live situations you have to be careful about your power source. It's common to see amplification, lights, etc. running on the same lines even on long extension cords. Bottom line is "brown out" or low voltage.

A momentary dip in power can cause ANY computer to suddenly restart. The above advise to use a UPS is spot on. I think after reading this I'm getting one myself. Although I have not had any problems in our environment it's good to be safe.

Also, loose connections are just as suspicious. Not a bad idea to wiggle connections while things are running to see if there are any weak connections. I'm amazed in my repair business to go in churches etc. and find wall sockets so loose the plugs fall out of them.

If my business depended on it, I would have 2 Kronos'. There have been enough reports and I would not be comfortable in a professional situation, without a 2nd board.

for example, I have quick access to a 2nd car and a 2nd computer.

I don't gig, however, the other night I was working in the studio. I have my Kronos 61 midied into my Nord 88. I use the weighted action for the K. I am blasting away when all of a sudden NO PIANO. I sit there wondering WTF. Yikes! I look at the K's screen, STARTUP FAILED REMOVE ALL USB DEVICES AND RESTART. Double yikes!! Anyway, I restart the K, everything is fine.

I have the K plugged into a super duper Furman power conditioner, I suppose the next thing is the UPS. Everything seems to be ok now but it scared the crap out of me for the moment.
Too much gear to list.

OK, I'll add my KRONOS "failure at gig" story: so we're in the middle of a set, and all of a sudden my K61 shuts down...oh no, the same problem I've seen reports of on the forum...and it's still plugged in, everything else in the power block is working, etc...then I notice that power switch is off, and the lower right-hand corner of my music stand is at exactly the right height and position to toggle the power switch if the singer, standing right in front of the keyboard stack, backs up a little bit...

Clever man, I support ya.

Is it just me or were there not so many failure at gig stories for OASYS? I seem to stumble upon comparatively quite a lot of such reports for Kronos (not just on this forum, mind you, but also from some people I know - which is really a shame). I guess Korg really cheapened out even on the most important part of any electronic product, the power supply. Well screw that!
