Kaossilator 2 - loading 8bar looped drum break / samples

Hi all thought I'd post this little tip... don't know if it's already been posted so my apologies if this is a duplicated post.

This is just my way but feel free to do it slightly different if you want.

I normally have pre-edited drum breaks or samples taken from MP3's etc.. I edit these using the free Audacity editor. I have had problems loading the full 8 bar sampled loop into the kaossilator 2 but have found a way.

Open audacity or whatever wave editor you use and load your song, wav, MP3 or whatever. Edit your break. You can hold down shift key while clicking on the play button in Audacity. This will play it continuously looped so you'll be able to hear how accurate your slice is.

Once you've got your loop, load it into a BPM analyser. I use the free Abyssmedia BPM counter. Here it will show you the BPM of your sample. A good trick when saving your sample is to include the BPM at the start of the name. e.g. 112_fatbeat.wav

Now transfer it to the Kaossilators SDcard. I created a little folder called Samples where I transfer my edited drum breaks. Pop your SDcard back into your Kaossilator 2 and start it up.

Keep pressing the function Key until you reach the load/save menu. Select load, now browse to you Samples folder. Find the drum loop you edited and select load then select which pad you want to load your sample to and it will load your sample.

Now I found that when loading the sample in this way, it would only playback the first 4 bars. Even if I set the Kaossilator BPM to the exact same as the sample and set Button I or II to 8 bars before loading the sample, it would always just play the first 4 bars.

If for example I loaded it to button II which was set to 8 bars it would just loop the first 4 bars of the drum loop twice.

So to get around it all you need to do is set the BPM on your Kaossilator 2 to half the BPM of the actual loop (e.g. 112_fatbeat.wav set bpm to 56). Then and set the loop length of Button I or II to 8 bars. Now when you load in your 8 bar sample it will play the full length sample and loop it in sync.

Hope this is useful...It was for me and I've made some funky little grooves. One other little tip is make sure your sample isn't too loud or else you may not be able to hear the sounds of the kaossilator as you play along and record. If it's too loud just load the sample into audacity and drop the level then save it again.

This maybe seems a bit long winded but it isn't.. especially if you pre-edit a load of drum breaks and samples at once then save them to SDcard.

Enjoy :)

Well i can't use it yet, since two of my ko-2s have broken down seemingly without explanation (except shoddy manufacturing)
