Crackling noises on Vintage Tape Choir?

I was looking for some voice sounds today for a project and loaded the Vintage Tape Choir (sounds nice, by the way)

A little later on, I noticed there was static/cracking noises coming from my system and I discovered it was the Kronos producing it. However, it turns out that it seems to be related to some patches. When I switched away from the Vintage Tape Choir to something else, the crackling noise went away completely.

I found a couple of other patches (I don't remember which ones) where this happened as well.

Anyone know what's going on? I've got a big show coming up in a few weeks and this is getting me VERY nervous.

Stereo Analog Record effect is in MFX1 for several of these Programs. This effect includes LP surface noise - i.e. static and crackling. Stored settings for noise volume appear to be 0, but perhaps they were edited.

Thanks for the quick response, I appreciate it. I'll check but I've done no editing of the patches on the Kronos. I typically just select patches and build up combis from them.

I didn't mention that i wasn't actually playing the Kronos when I noticed this noise. Is it the case that stereo analog noise effect is supposed to be there all the time, even when one isn't playing anything?

yes. the analog noise effect produces, well...analog record noise all the time, even when keys are not pressed. Bypass the effect or reduce the level and you'll see the noise goes away.

Its deliberate. If it has Vintage or Analog in the name, more than likely it has that effect on it and it has the static/crackling you mentioned.
Its meant to give it an old, vinyl sound to it. I know theres also Analog Strings that has it as well.

Well, for what it's worth,I was getting ready to pack it up and take it back to Sam Ash for repair.

Must say I don't understand the decision behind this one. It's fine to have the noise WHILE playing, but having it come on when it's just sitting there cued up for the next song which one hasn't started only to have crackle coming out of high powered amps and speakers does not seem like a brilliant idea to me.

Other than that, I'm pretty happy with it.

Its the analog effect (as Dan said) that makes the crackling sound.. Tou just have to turn it off.. It's on the Ifx tab.. It's not hardware problem... It's not even a problem at all..

Yes, understood --- and I'll be turning it off as soon as I get to my studio. I'm also glad to know it was just an effect and not a faulty keyboard!

I'm pretty sure you could set the effect to be "gated" as well - so that you only hear it while pressing a key. Just a matter of preference, really.

Yeah, I'll have to figure out how to do that --- I have very little experience with actually editing stuff on it.

You can also Record turning on or off the Effect, I believe. Like if you don't want it at the start of your song...record your track and push Off then...when you want it, push On and I think that would work.

I always set this effect to be gated with G1+Dmp as the modulation source, but you seem to have less fine control over the effect volume when using it as modulation for noise level vs wet/dry. Also behaves funny with SST, playing noise over other the next patch too whilst keys are depressed.

But yes, it is not faulty. This question goes back years. And the noise is apparently not intentionally on all the time on this patch. It can actually be a useful effect to create a particular atmosphere.

Live show --- no recording, everything is real time....the old fashioned way where we have to actually play the right notes at the right time :D

I'm just VERY glad to know it wasn't a defect in the keyboard. I was in real panic mode for a few hours until Dan responded!

And I thank everyone else for the useful comments.

Now, on with the show, 3 weeks and counting.

(By the way, if anyone's in NYC, it's a show at B.B. King doing some of Peter Gabriel's original music featuring some of Peter Gabriel's original band members:

I once had something similar, namely a lot of noise (no crackling).
It was not on all programs either.

It turned out that the knobs on the back of the Kronos was rotated a little when moving it out of the case probably, so the microphone sampling inputs where on max volume.
