KRONOS a go for Transport Controls for DAW?

I'm just about to pull the trigger on the Kronos, but haven't found any information if Kronos works equally well as a midi controller, and this is one of my requirements. I have an XF here that does the job fairly well, as well as a novation SLmk2 zero, if that doesn't cut it.

The biggest thing I'd like to know,is when using your DAW,does the Kronos allow for transport controls? Does it respond to cc's or sysex, and if sysex, have any of you been successful at getting it to work with your daw?

Thanks in advance

The Kronos makes an excellent MIDI master controller for your DAW. That's what External Mode on the Kronos' control surface is all about. The control surface with its many buttons, knobs and sliders, can be mapped to suit your Daw. There are already currently dozens of setups already in there and you can have up to 128 custom setups/mappings of your own. Get one!

I don't know what you can use for transport controls on the Kronos front panel...

LivePsy: I can't see that it's possible to assign the Seq controls when in Ext Mode, which is a pity as these would be ideal for transport controls.
Maybe it's possible to assign an external controller (Nanopad?) to the Ext2 controls and use that for transport control, so you don't have to use the Kronos control surface switches - but in that case then there's no need for the Kronos in the set up; as an external controller can be setup to directly control your DAW transport anyway.

YES YOU CAN use the control surface as transport controls. They're just cc#'s 114 to 118 in pro-tools for example. It's pretty simple, just assign the buttons you want to assign to the aforementioned cc#'s. In Global mode, go to the Midi tab and select Ext. There are 128 programmable setups. A majority of these are already pre-mapped external setups for a host of different DAWs as switches knobs and sliders are all midi channel and cc# assignable. The manual explains which DAW's these are, all of them are customizable. You can reassign the switches to these cc's:
Sw1 - 014 (move bank left)
Sw2 - 015 (move bank right)
Sw3 - 113 (loop button)
Sw4 - 114 (rewind)
Sw5 - 115 (fast forward)
Sw6 - 116 (stop)
Sw7 - 117 (play)
Sw8 - 118 (record) ....and there you go... Transport Controls!

Although it would surely be nice to have the dedicated transport buttons being assignable to midi ccs, too - or maybe "hardwired" to the CC numbers in the range 112...120, which is common practice for transport controls...

Great post. I'll look into Logic manual to find transport cc's and post it here ! cheers, neo

I see I'm responding to an old thread but I've just started looking into this as well, but using the Presonus Studio One DAW. In my case, I created control data on an unused MIDI channel (in my case track 15, and MIDI channel "1") that sends a cc# 116 with a value of 127 in the first bar to command recording as soon as I press PLAY in SEQ mode. Be sure to select EXT on the "Status" portion (MIDI tab) of whichever track you are using to command the transport message.

Just to check if I getting this right, I can use my Kronos to operate the transport controls of my Cubase daw? Record, rewind, play, fast forward, etc?

Basically the knobs and buttons and faders to the left you can use but from what I was trying I could not get the Kronos transport controls for its sequencer to work for the transport functions of the daw I was using. Logic. I also did not try using any of the buttons to the left of the faders knobs and buttons so I can't say about those.

Hey I'm resurrecting this thread. I was able to set up B1-B8 on my Kronos to control my DAW's transport controls. However, the buttons are behaving like on/off switches and so I have to hit each one twice. The first press (on) transmits the CC message while the second press (off) doesn't seem to transmit the same message. Any way to make this work so it always transmits the message when I hit the button?

If it matters, B1-B8 are assigned to CC 70-77 on Gch.

SW1 and SW2 operating mode can be set to toggle or momentary.

That's cool, but I don't believe SW 1 and 2 send to external MIDI. I need to set the Switches 1-16 that are used in "EXT" control mode to momentary or toggle. Any way to do this?

If not, is there some other workaround to having the Kronos control my DAW's transport that works a little bit better? Seems like a very basic feature.
