Hello guys,

I need your advice on how to do what I described in the title, I've tried converting each multi-sampled sound into a program, then created a combination and combined those programs, but when I try to add effects (IFX,MFX) and modified the return (1,2) values I didn't notice any difference, I made sure they all run on the same channel which is G, but still I am not convinced with what I got.

Please, can someone tell me the best way to do it, I want to add 2 multi-sampled sounds (Strings,Sax) and I want to add a sustain effect to each sound, and some reverb...etc.

The sustain part of the problem you have to tackle at the amp section of the program, since that is where the ADSR parameters for the sound are and they carry up to the combi level, including controllers such as the sustain pedal.

As to the effects, the first place you'll "notice" a change is in master FX. The tracks of most combis will automatically default to MFX, but you'll hear a difference only if you've actually turned MFX on and selected an effect, and if the balance of the MFX is not "dry".

Similarly, Insert FX require you to first route the combi track to an IFX module (or chain of FX), then check a box to activate it, then select an effect (its not as complex as it sounds written down... just takes a couple of seconds once you've done the routine a couple of times). The resulting sound can then be sent to MFX for final processing.

Basically, what you're doing is making a virtual patch cord to send the sound (sax for example) to a virtual stack of gear (the 50 or so FX in the IFX section), you have to plug it in and turn it on. Look at what some of the on-board sax sounds use as insert FX -- you can copy them easily using the pull down menus.

You may also want several FX at once - compression, reverb, chorus, detune (whatever) and there are tricks to selecting the order as well, but essentially you want instrument specific FX in Insert section and whole-mix ambient FX (like reverb) as Master FX.

Then pick some combis similar to what you want to do and see how they are put together; specifically, FX routing, FX order, etc. If you like you can save a lot of time by simply copying a combi and just substituting your programs. Practically every combi can be a template for creating your own stuff once you get a bit of hands-on experience.
