M3 VST plugin, must I have firewire?

Hi all.
Stand alone M3 editor works fine on my PC.
Midi works fine in Cubase.
Have the M3 VST plugin installed and get it displayed properly from within cubase. But when I start it, it says it cant find my M3.
Before I spend ages trying to work out where the problem lies, reading the editor manual, it seems to imply I must have Firewire to use the VST part?
Is that correct, if so, that's why I cant get it working as I only have the USB Midi, hence wont bother to solve a problem thats insolvable
Thanks
Joe
