Hey all,

So I've been playing around with my M50 for a few months now, and I'm starting to become interested in crafting my own patches. To start off, I'm going to follow directions of some forum posts to make my own JR patches.

Here is what I'm wondering:

I remember starting to follow the directions to make a JR Lead. It called for a saw layer. In the banks, I can't see any sounds that are "pure saw," meaning that I had to first take away all the effects on the sound so that only the sound I wanted was left. Is there an easier way? I mean, are there sounds on the M50 that are just "boring" sine, saw, pulse, and square waves?

Am I making any sense?

If you're making a program, you'll need to choose an appropriate multisample. There are plenty of raw waveforms - you should find something suitable from #658 and up. Have a poke around.

Ditto Kim's point to the 650's in the ROM waves.

If you find something close to what you want -- dry, straightforward synth -- you can save it as a template to use by dropping in various wave forms. It's an easier/faster approach than building up from an <INIT> file because much of the characteristic programming for that voice type is already done. Then you can try various wave form combinations and save what you like best.

I like to mess with substitution for a lot of things -- brass sounds in particular benefit from this approach; subbing in french horn, muted trumpet, or trombone completely changes some of the more generic "ensemble" patches into really usable sounds.
