Editing unassigned slots

I just started using a Korg Triton Rack. It's funny, I started out searching for a Korg Triton Extreme, kept being put off by the prices they achieved in eBay, ended up buying a whole bunch of other synths in the mean time including a Hartmann Neuron, and then I finally end up with a Triton, albeit a Rack not an Extreme. Hit's a funny ol' world, hin'it? Anyway, I digress.

I have a standard Rack with EXB-PCMs 1, 2, and 5, and EXB-MOSS. When tooling through the dial, there are a lot of program names in C, D and E that don't play any sound. I assume these are the names of programs normally found in the modules that I do not have installed, i.e. 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9. May I assume that I cannot initialize these slots with a sine wave and edit them into my own sounds? It seems like such a waste, if they are valid memory points. Elsewise, if they are just place holders with no RAM associated, that would pretty much answer my question. So, which is it, oh great and powerful OZ? I beseech thee and thank thee for thy merciful wisdom. Also, who kakked the Bishop of Westminster?

You can overwrite individual programs with an <Init> file -- look in the last bank -- and start over, or if you have a librarian just overwrite whole banks. All memory slots are completely re-writable; there are no ROM preset voices.

There should be a wipe-out init function that takes out all of the data [RTFM for the exact initialization routine], then you could just re-load the factory banks and those for the EXB's you've installed.

The way to tell if it is indeed an EXB based program is to look at the oscillator selection page in program edit mode; it will say EXB## and may also say "not found -- clicking on the sample name and jogging the data wheel will let you activate it by selecting Internal as opposed to EXB samples.

NOTE: the data is NOT useless; IF you have a fair idea of what should go in the sample slot (the name is a clue, EP in the name is gonna look for an EP, etc.; it doesn't care if it gets the RIGHT wave as long as it has one) you can re-create programs and even combis with pretty useable results.

You can put anything you want in the C & D banks, both external and internal as long as the ROM is there for the programs.
